Could this affect resort preference?

We have this discussion a lot! Being from Michigan, we can find beautiful lodges within a 2 hour drive from home. So while the Wilderness Lodge looks beautiful, it is just not someplace we feel the need to stay. We actually had reservation there before, and ended up changing to the Beach Club. We just want to experience something different when we are on vacation.

We live in NY, so the Contemporary, while it's location is great, does not appeal to me theme-wise. We also go to the Cape May NJ area often, and while it's not exactly the same, its close enough theme-wise to BC/YC/Boardwalk so that area doesn't appeal to me at all.

That being said, I have never stayed anywhere else that has giraffe and kudu roaming outside my window, which is why we're planning our 3rd stay at AKL. If the price was equal to AKL, I would try Poly (I loved Hawaii on our honeymoon), but for now, for my son the animal lover, AKL it is.

It makes sense to think that where you live would affect what you like in a resort and that something similiar to where you live might not thrill you. But I think it is more on how you view the whole thing.

I grew up in a beachside community and live close enough to have gone to New Orleans numerous times yet I still love POR & POFQ. And I still love CBR even though it is very beachy and has the white sand that I've grown up with. Even though the colors and general look of the resort is familiar to home, these resorts are still well enough done that I still feel transported to another place that is very very different from home.

But on the flipside my absolute favorite resort is WL and you do not find that type of structure or feeling anywere near to where I live. So I guess since it is so unlike what I'm used to maybe it is my favorite but the familiarity of CBR, POR, & POFQ don't make me like those resorts any less. Make sense? :)

I never thought much about it but this makes sense as to why I love the AKL. I grew up camping all of the time so I'm not enthused about WL. I lived on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi 90 minutes from New Orleans for 7 years so POR and POFQ don't grab me. I lived 2 years on Cape Cod so I'm not into the beachy theme. And I've vacationed several times in Hawaii so the Poly seems fake to me. I've never been to Africa and it's doubtful that I'll get there anytime soon so the AKL definitely gets it done for me.

I think it's great that WDW has something for everybody. The only resort we have multiple stays at is SSR and part of the fun for me is trying a new place because it's like my first trip to WDW all over again.
