One of my older cats has been losing weight over the past month or so. While she is still frisky, there just seems to be a general overall decline in her appearance.

I have a Vet appointment this morning at 8:15 and I'm really nervous about what they might find. :( Some good thoughts would be most appreciated. I'll update when we get back.

*Update*
We're back from the Vet. The Calico has hyperthyroidism. The Vet found a small nodule on her thyroid and with her symptoms is 99% sure that's what it is. I'll be bringing her back for blood work later this week.

While not as bad as a lot of other things it could have been, this is still a concern. The options are medication, removal of the thyroid or killing the thyroid with a radioactive material. The third option is out as the cost is well over $1000! With her age and a moderate heart murmur, I'm not sold on the surgery so it looks like we'll be trying the medication and then see what happens.

Thank you all for your good wishes. I know the Calico thanks you too. :)

How old is you kitty? Could be age related.

Sending good thought, pixie dust and well wishes your way. :wizard: :goodvibes :wizard:

I'll be thinking about you. Let us know what the vet says.

Sending some good, positive thoughts and some :grouphug:

Wishing your cat the best. I hope its something thats easily treated.
I know how much I love my cats and how worried I get when they are sick.
Lots of luck today, please keep us updated.

:grouphug: and :wizard: for you and your little fur baby!

Good luck to you and your cat. I will think about you both today and hope everything is ok.

Lot's of pixie dust for your kitty! :wizard:

My calico is 16 and is also losing weight. She used to an overweight cat and now she is slightly underweight. Yet she is still active and keeps herself very clean. She had a vet appointment yesterday, she also has a possible thyroid problem. We now have to watch her weight. I feel your pain. Good luck to your beautiful calico!

One of our cats had hyperthyroidism.
We did the medication for all of a week.....you had to do it everyday....no misses. We leave our kitties alone when we travel, so that wasn't going to work.
So we stopped that and went with the radioactive treatment. It was pricey, but my baby was worth it. It has been almost 3 years now and he is doing great!
Good luck with whatever you decide ::yes::
 to your furbaby.....and you too.

We've gone the medication route for our cat that was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. It's not an uncommon thing in an older cat and ours was on medication for awhile before eventually dying of old age, so it is something that can be managed. I know how hard it is to have aging kitties!

I did the medication and it worked well on my Mr. Red for several years. It took a little while for his body to get used to it but he did well. He passed on at the age of 17.

Thanks for the update.

Sending Miss Calico pixie dust in hopes that the medication does the trick. :wizard:

She's such a cutie, by the way. :goodvibes

Just wanted to update on the sick kitty we had here. She has now been on medication for her thyroid for 8 days and the difference in her is amazing.

Her energy level is higher, she looks better (fur isn't dull and brittle, she's grooming herself) and yesterday, for the first time in ages, she was playing with one of the other cats.

I thought medicating her would be a nightmare but I crush the pills into her food and she eats them right up. I do have to guard the dish while she's eating though so that none of the other cats steal it from her. :teeth:

So a great update on Miss Calico. :thumbsup2

Glad to hear that your kitty is doing better! Our 18 year old cat Schmoo was recently diagnosed with the same thing and once she got on her meds the change was quick and amazing! It has been a couple months now and she is doing real well!

Jill

Just wanted to add that Schmoo took her meds ok for a while and then got sneaky and started to eat around the pill. We now mix it up inside baby food and she likes that much better - she likes the lamb and ham the most. We also have to put her in the bathroom with her food so the two 9-month olds don't get ahold of it. :)
