Costa Maya was a total bust. If you have the beach excursion booked you will be extremely unhappy with your choice! Cancel immediately and stay on the boat. The beach was filthy and not worth a darn, let alone $35 pp. Broken boats and 1 game for the kids for which the prize was a ballon! I think you will be hard pressed to find more than 5 people out of a sell out excursion that were satisfied. Beware..........

Sorry to hear that missyoh8! We just booked a horseback ride for our 10/9 cruise. Your post does not sound encouraging. Did you see any riders while you were on the beach?

Hello!

We are also on the Oct. 9th sailing. How did you find out about Costa Maya Excursions? How can we book them now? I am hoping to do some shopping there, how was that? Sorry for all the questions, but we are getting so excited. BTW DH spoke with a DCL Rep. this morning and she told him our sailing will be one of the first, if not the first, to make our stop in Castaway Cay yippee!!

Thanks,
Emily

If I had to do it over again I would not do any excursions and just get off the boat and look around...........in about 20 minutes we would have returned to the boat. Don't let this discourage you about your DCL experience. As long as there are no hurricanes DCL is good (great) at what they do! The boat is the highlight NOT the ports! I only have first hand knowlege of the beach excursion. I had another cruisemate tell me the snorkeling was terrible as well and that they had a bad experience with the bus to get there (wouldn't do it again). The shopping is nothing, tshirts and the like. To be honest we were uncomfortable leaving the port area with our children in hind site. We had an experience that left us very uneasy with the area.............I am sure others did not, this is just the opinion we had.

Do not have any knowlege of the horseback riding. No we did not see this going on. I would start a thread and see if anyone did, as I am sure this is not inexpensive.

Have a hoot on your upcoming cruises. We heard last night on the ship they were considering CC this week! Darn we had some bad luck, but it leaves us another reason to rebook Monday when our TA opens!

So was that Overo Beach or what every its called? You had to take the bus? How long was the drive?

We are looking at booking through http://costamayacruiseexcursions.com for a horseback riding trip and their beach break which looks nice. It is only $25 and they horseback riding sounds great, they go on the beach and through the village.

They also offer a bunch of other trips, DH wanted the deep sea fishing but I had already planned the day:teeth: There is a snorkeling trip by boat too.

Would love to hear from anyone that has booked with Costa Maya Cruise Excursions!

:(

Yes, I believe it was Uvero Beach................the trip was about 30 minutes by bus. Do not go by taxi, although the excursion desk informed us you could! I do not know of any of the other beaches. I did not hear one good remark on board about any excursions at this port. Start a thread and see what you get, I would be interested as well. I just hate for anyone else to get ripped off and loose a day doing it!

Bump...

Can someone tell me if the Reef snorkling by boat in Costa Maya is worth it, I was looking at doing this through costa maya cruise excursions but this post is scaring me. Pls help we are on the Oct 9 sailing.THANKS....:)

We took the Mayan Ruins excursion with our two young children and thought it was fantastic! It's not Chichen Itza but a very good choice to experience Mexican history. Our guide, Dora, was very informative. Very fairly priced. You wouldn't want to do this on your own as the ruins are about 1 hour away from the port and you wouldn't have the benefit of a guide to explain the site to you. The bus was very comfortable and the ruins impressive. We left at 8:30 and didn't get back to the port until 1:30 at which time we took a taxi to Mahahual. We sat under an umbrella, enjoyed a few Sol beers and some chicken fajitas and dipped our toes in the warm water. From where we sat, there were jet skiiers and a banana boat. I would agree that, if visiting Mahahual was all you did, you probably would be disappointed as there is not much there.

However, it is important to mention that Costa Maya has only been a port for a couple of years. Construction will boom in the next few years on the road from the port to the village. You can see all the side/offshoot roads are built and named but no buildings are there...yet. It's a shame that in 15 years, this is going to look like any other port you visit. The village of Mahahual had only 20 families living there until 2002 and now there are maybe 2000 people. It is an authentic Mexican seaside village. If you're expecting Hard Rock Cafes, McDonald's and Senor Frogs, you'd be better off visiting Cancun or Vegas. If you want to see authentic Mexico, visit Costa Maya now before it's too late. I much preferred this port to touristy Cozumel with its "One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Floor" T-shirts.

We agree with four foxes. We did the Mayan ruins tour with Diana as our guide, and she was wonderful!! We learned alot, the ruins are awesome. The trip over went very quickly as the guide talked. We then had the opportunity to shop if desired.

I walked through the pier, got a cab (cost about $6) and went to the fishing village about 10 mintues away (you can see it from the ship). I actually felt like I was in a foreign place instead of a shopping mall with palm trees. There were vendors, a great beach, I ate lunch right on the beach and bought some beautiful jewelry from the local vendors. I highly recommend it! By the way, I was a woman by myself and didn't feel the least bit nervous. My hubby and sons decided to stay aboard that day.
