In early 2012, we went from Port Canaveral to Disney World and hit about 5 tolls unexpectedly. Luckily we had a wallet full of US change. I want to be prepared again this time. We'll be driving from a cruise in Miami up to the Disney World hotel area, then going back and forth to Universal Studios. Thanks for helping!

WDW to universal has no tolls. Just get to I-4 and go east (direction-and-map-wise you're going north at that point but out of Orlando 4 is an east-west highway) to get up to universal. And on 4 West to go back to WDW.

Miami has a turnpike and I believe part of it has tolls that canNOT be paid for with cash.

POM to WDW down the turnpike is going to cost you about $18-$20 in tolls.
It's almost 250 miles and 3.5-4.5 hour drive depending on traffic.

The Miami area uses Cashless tolling so you will need to use the rental car companies Platepass option OR your own Sunpass transponder.

Alamo, National, Enterprise have the best toll option IMHO.
They charge $3.95/day admin fee + the actual toll cost, but this is only charged on days you actually accrue tolls. So basically only the one day you drive from POM to WDW.

WDW to Universal is a straight drive along I-4 with no tolls as bumbershoot already noted above.

***FYI: it is actually possible to avoid toll roads by taking SR-27 OR I-95 but it is a longer route and traffic gets really crazy the closer you get to Miami.
We tried both and hated it. Bought our own Sunpass transponder and use the Turnpike whenever we visit the Miami area or the Keys now.

We will be heading to WDW from FL cruise port. I tried to purchase a sunpass on line--but it requires the license plate info. We will have a rental car--any suggestions?

Just use your own vehicles registration to make the purchase.
When you arrive at the rental lot, use the Sunpass app on your smartphone to add the rental car info.

Hehehe. I didn't think of that. Thanks
Adding the rental car info to your Sunpass account is optional but definitely recommended.
We've never had a toll that the transponder didn't register, but I always add the rental car info when we pick up the vehicle just in case.

If for some reason, your transponder is not picked up by the receiver in the Sunpass lane then the system will take a photo of the vehicles licence plate.
The photo (Platepass) will find the Sunpass account that is associated with the vehicle licence number which is usually the rental car company.

If you add the rental car licence number to your Sunpass account, the Platepass system will see the vehicles plate number as being attached to your transponder and the toll will be charged to your Sunpass account.

If you don't add the rental car licence number to your Sunpass account, the Platepass system will send the toll to the owner of the plate (the rental car company)
