I asked on the transportation board and got nada!

I'm asking for a friend....

Does anyone know the cost of a taxi from Ft Wilderness Cabins to a local Walmart? I don't need an exact, but just as estimate.

She looked at Goodings and Garden Grocer but thought the prices were too high, she wants to see if it would be cheaper to get a taxi to Walmart to pick up the things she needs. Their plane lands around 6:30pm, so I guess she would go after they got settled in the cabin.

Thanks!

Current taxi fare in the Orlando area is $2.20 for the first 1/4 mile and then 55¢ for each additional 1/4 mile (or 80 seconds of waiting time). In addition, there is a $0.50 surcharge on all rides (except the surcharge is $1.00 to or from the airport).

And according to Mapquest it is about 8 miles, but I think they are underestimating the distance.

Don't know about taxi fare but we used We go shop and thought she did a great job. The groceries are just the price on the receipt with a small fee. Our fee was $22 plus tip. Well worth the delivery.

I would hop on a bus and take it to DTD or something so you skip half the drive through disney property.

Which would make it $20 each way, plus tip, assuming you don't have the taxi wait and call a new one. But taxis probably are going to be less than completely direct - I'd count on at LEAST $60 in cab fare + tip.

Garden grocers prices have to be pretty darn high AND you have to get a lot of stuff to justify cab fare.

Wego is only $17 for up to $100 of stuff and they will shop at Walmart for you. :thumbsup2
$22 for over $100...

We used Wegoshop.com too! Marge was awesome...she got everything I wanted exactly, and substituted 1 item that she couldnt find at Walmart (we asked for sugar free Tang, she got us sugar free store brand orange drink). :thumbsup2 As the others said...it will cost much more to take a taxi, which happens to be what we were originally going to do before I found out about wegoshop. Aside from the delivery charge, you pay only what Walmart charges. Of course a tip isn't required, but it's nice to tip people who deliver stuff. I tipped her an extra $15 because she showed up 5 mins before our arranged time and did really good with getting exactly what we wanted.
Here is a link to the WDW location (wegoshop is all over the place) http://www.wegoshop.com/location/wgs-location15.htm :wizard:

quick question...do you have to order $100 worth of stuff or is just up to $100 and then there is a $17 fee? I only want to purchase like $30 worth of stuff and am willing to pay $17 but I wonder if they mind/accept small $$ orders?

Maybe you can find someone to share a grocery order with to split the bill. I was thinking of doing this.

She will do a small order - but for $30 worth of stuff, they MIGHT have it on site at the DVC connected resorts or Ft. Wilderness- and you can pack the rest.

We pack cereal, salt, pepper, sugar, peanut butter, jam, coffee, coffee filters, microwave popcorn - things that pack pretty easily. We then stop by the resort store and get eggs, cheese, milk, half and half. The stores have high prices, but the increase isn't as much as the wegoshop fee. The stores also have a VERY small selection, but since we aren't cooking much, it works for us.

If you are getting bottled water, however, that one thing can make a wegoshop order start looking worthwhile. Its too heavy to pack if you are flying, expensive on property.

Yup, we wanted to just get some water, soda, bread, peanut butter/jelly, snacks....that type of thing. I don't mind packing a suitcase full of that stuff (I have an spare extra large bag) but I can't go over 50lbs -dont think I would- and am not sure how bottled water or canned soda would do via baggage handling

I still have a few days to figure this out...thanks for your advice :)

If you are up for some more advice....

It took us about two DVC trips where we had a kitchen to learn not to overbuy groceries. It can be REALLY easy to end up at the end of the week with half a flat of water, 18 cans of pop from the 24 pack you bought, enough snacks for a kindergarten classroom. And then we were stuck. A lot of it will pack back, but most of it won't and with airline weight issues, water and pop isn't coming back with us!

Assuming that you are picking up some of this because you anticipate saving money over buying pop from the store at Disney (and not because you need your Diet Dr. Pepper that you can't get on property), keep in mind that spending a bunch of money for food left behind for housekeeping may turn out to be MORE expensive than just buying on site.
