Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. In Post #3 there is an alphabetic listing of categories. You may want to look for the "dietary restrictions" area for advice, links to threads, and other information.

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

Corn allergy is a tough one. A lot will depend on how sensitive the child is. Most prepared food contains corn. Sit down meals will be easier because the chef can help to make foods with minimal amounts of corn. I would make sure the family brings some safe snack food because there aren't may out there without some corn derivitive.

I'm allergic to corn too and LOVE Disney for all the special care they take to make eating there an enjoyable experience. I see someone already provided a link to more information and you'll find lots and lots of 'what to do' answers about food allergies.

On my last trip in May '08 I ate out almost every day and didn't have any problems. We also had a kitchen so I could cook my own food.

Side note - my allergy is not just to food - i have to be careful about inhaling corn as well (like the smell of popcorn). If the child is sensitive you may want to ask about the cleaners used in the room. For example Febreeze contains corn.

The items not identified as "corn" can cause trouble. When filling out the paperwork Disney gives you to specifically identify the allergy, be sure to include those hidden items - like 'xanthum gum' or 'dextrose'.

Its difficult to ask about ingredients at the fast service locations - they're loud and you don't want to hold up lines, so get as much info as possible before your trip.

Common sense is your best friend - fresh fruit and vegies always seem like an ok choice but how were they cleaned? Some fruit/vegie washes (like Fit) include corn. Definitly have corn free snacks on hand - sometimes you just don't want to take a chance!

Good luck and if you're going 1/26 - 2/2 I'll see ya there!

If the kid is OK with small amounts of corn, such as traces of corn derivatives or corn-fed meats, you might be able to get by just avoiding the obvious things. Meat, fruit, veg and other grains (rice, wheat, etc) might be a good route to go, as long as he / she isn't too sensitive. I used to have a corn allergy when I was little, but thankfully it was comparitively mild (it was only when I ate corn flour, corn syrup or sweetcorn, that I actually got enough of it to set me off) and I grew out of it.

I'm guessing your friends are used to providing a corn-free diet at home. If they live in the States (America uses a lot more corn products than we do here in the UK), the same rules that they use there should be OK to apply at Disney. You can view the restaurant menus before you go, to see what each of the places offer.

Good luck, and have a great trip! :thumbsup2
