Has anyone stayed in the Coral Gables area before their Miami cruise? I was originally looking at hotels closer to the airport, but a lot of reviewers noted that the area wasn't the safest :confused3.

I used to live in the area. I would probably stay in the Coconut Grove area - the Doubletree or the Hampton Inn spring to mind.

Coconut Grove also has a Courtyard, The Mayfair, Sonesta, The Mutiny and a Residence Inn. All are close to Cocowalk where you can shop and dine. The Residence Inn may be close as it is under renovations.

Our whole family just got back from a long weekend there. Miami is our home town. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. It was very nice and surprisingly reasonably priced too. It's in between the airport and the port.

If you want a splurge check out The Biltmore, its beautiful.
They also have a wonderful weekend brunch.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations!:-) I've narrowed it down to Hampton Inn Coconut Grove, or maybe the Hyatt. Lorimay the Biltmore does look beautiful, not much room to splurge though.
