This will be our third trip to the World and we have never went to AK before. Give me the scoop on what is great and what to avoid. How are the restaurants there? What is not to miss? What is ROL? Do they have a lot of rides/attractions? We do not have hoppers and we will only have 5 days. Wondering if we could hit this park around 1pm our arrival day (Monday) and see it all? We get in about 11am. Thanks!

Yes, I think you can do the park if you make it there by noon and use your fast pass well.

Attractions to see for adults / older kids (in my opinion): Dinosaur, Everest, Safari, Kali Rapids.
Shows: Lion King, Flights of Wonder, Nemo

Table service : Tusker House

River of Light will be a night time show most likely starting in June.

I suggest Maharaja Jungle Trek. Flame Tree BBQ. You didn't say who is "we" - if you have small children, yes there a few kiddie type rides that could eat up some time. For adults, the above mentioned rides would about cover it as far as rides. Lots to walk around and look at though such as my mention of the Jungle Trek.

I won't try to convince anyone to visit a park if the attractions hold no appeal for them, but AK is our second favorite park, after MK. Descriptions for every attraction can be found on the official site. More thorough descriptions, with practical considerations (scary factor for kids, etc) can be found at easywdw.com

All of the shows are excellent. The only rides we skip are the ones in Dinoland ( except Dinosaur which is a must do for us). It is already a full day ( or more) park for us, and that is before ROL and the evening safari open.

ROL will be the night show at AK. It will apparently run more than once a night, like Fantasmic, or WOC in DLR.

If you don't arrive until 1:00, it would probably be possible to hit a lot of the attractions, but you won't have time for everything, since the walking trails close at sunset. Much depends on the time of year you will be visiting, and how late they extend the hours. Hours will definitely be extended well past the current posted hours.

Agree with previous poster...Flights of Wonder is a must. It is often over looked. If you are pressed for time I would suggest Lion King over Nemo.

I'm in the minority here, but I don't think AK is worth the visit except for EE which I feel is the best ride at disney. If you have Park hoppers go there for that ride.
We find the park really hot, really crowded and not that many attractions that interest us.

We finally went for the 1st time our last trip. While I liked it OK, it is an easy skip for me. Last trip we only had 4 park days, no hoppers, so we spent 1 day at each park. I REALLY missed doing the 2nd MK day though. This trip we have 5 days with hoppers, so we might swing by AK, depending on how things go. Everest is super fun, the Lion King show was really good. We saw very few animals on the safari. Tusker House was great. But, it just doesn't have the same appeal to me as the other 3.

If you don't want to go, don't. Why do we need to convince you? We don't get any ticket money out of it.

As one of the biggest parks (area wise) it is a LOT of walking to get to places compared to the other parks. We usually go for a 1/2 day and then hop to another park at night. The safari, Kahli, Everest, Dinosaur are the main rides we always hit. We like the shows too and will do Lion King, Nemo, and It's a Bug's Life. As far as the animals go, we have one of the best, if not the best zoo in the country (Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo) less than 45 minutes away. Seeing the animals is fun, but it is not part of our touring plan.

Tusker House and Flame Tree BBQ are the two places we tend to eat at as well.

I've only been to Animal Kingdom once 17 years ago, but I'm soooo excited to go back for our upcoming trip. And we won't even do EE, Kali, or Dinosaur. We are animal lovers though, so we look at AK as a zoo on steroids. The safari was so fun when we were there last time, and it sounds like though they've changed it a little, it is still wonderful.
It's a really pretty park too.
The cool thing about all of the parks is they're all so different. So, if you're up for an experience that is unlike one you can have at the other three, head to AK.

Whenever I hear the opening notes of "The Circle of Life" on my Disney CD that I listen to constantly in my vehicle, I imagine walking into Animal Kingdom. :)

Spend a whole day to do it justice, otherwise you will run around like a chicken with your head cut off trying to catch the highlights. It's a pleasant day at Disney. I like the Safari ride, Kali River rapids, Dinosaur - I am not into rollercoasters but if you are I am sure EE is great. The Festival of the Lion King and Nemo shows are awesome! I like Flights of Wonder. Tusker House was excellent for lunch. Flame tree BBQ is also good. You are the only one who can decide if you like something or not. I would try it and then you will know. But don't rush thru it - take the day to enjoy it

I loved AK!!! We did the safari three times! Everest is one of the best roller coasters ever! Yak & Yeti was super duper yummy!!! The whole theme of the park is just beautiful!!! We are going in February of next year and doing a day and a half this time at AK!!! :)

Definitely go!!! AK is one of our favorite parks. Its a more relaxing day for us since we tend to do more strolling and less rushing to get to everything. If you like thrill rides, EE and Dinosaur are great. Kali River Rapids is fun but very short so not worth a long wait for us. When the kids were younger they loved the Boneyard and the Carnival themed area with the games. If you like animals, you can treat it like a zoo and enjoy walking and seeing the exhibits. We always do Kilimanjaro Safaris. The bird shows are wonderful. The Nemo and Lion King shows are terrific. We really liked the food at Harambe Market but the wait at some of the windows was quite long. Flame Tree BBQ was also really good. Tusker House not so much. The food was good and the characters were fun but not worth the price.

We give AK a full day and we still don't get to everything.

Whether you should go depends completely on what you're into. I think animal kingdom is probably the park that has the most divergent opinions about it. That's because you "get it" or you don't.

That's not a right or wrong thing, just different ways of enjoying parks.

So the question is, what type of person are you?

Here is who I think would be unlikely to like animal kingdom very much:

people who are very focused on the very Disney-est of Disney experiences. Don't think princesses, Mickey, fantasyland. Sure, they work those elements in, but for my money those things could disappear and animal kingdom wouldn't change very much.

People who are all about the rides. Animal kingdom is my favorite park, and I've never ridden expedition Everest. I'm lukewarm on dinosaur, and bug. My favorite attractions aren't even really rides in the classical sense.

As far as the themepark experience goes, AK is almost the anti-Magic Kingdom. Not because I don't love both, but because I think they're the furthest away from each other on the spectrum of what Disney is about. (for what it's worth, Magic Kingdom is my second favorite park.)

OK then, who is likely to be in the animal kingdom?

The obvious one are animal lovers. Flights of wonder is an amazing bird show (really). The Safari is fantastic. For instance, I absolutely geek out about those experiences. My mother-in-law... She could take or leave it. She prefers her animals with barbecue sauce.

The second thing that I don't hear enough about are people who love culture. And by that I mean culture from the anthropology perspective, not the big C culture. I love the look and feel of the different lands, that are so richly themed to look and feel like villages from developing nations. Cinderella's Castle is about transporting you to an imaginary fantasyland. Harambe market is about transporting you to Africa. And then you got all of the Asian section. Just think of Disney Imagineering applied to bringing distant cultures. to life rather than fantasy realms. And unlike Epcot, where it's more of a world fair feel, animal kingdom is more of an "I can almost imagine I'm there" feel. (within the realistic parameters of an Orlando theme park :) )

If you prefer a well done French or Italian dish then animal kingdom is not your spot. If you get excited about the idea of counter service that presents interesting and unique food from more exotic cultures, then animal kingdom is a good fit. (again, within the parameters….)

Finally, what type of physical space do you like? Animal kingdom is all about vegetation. It has a very natural feel about it, including the oppressive heat sometimes!

For me, perhaps the quintessential animal kingdom experience that separates those of us who love it from those of us who don't are the two walking trails.

Being on a jungle path that winds through vegetation and then coming to a little bridge that I can cross and see gorillas that seem to be right there was, for me, a breathtaking experience. Walking through the ruins of an Asian culture while observing Tigers was fascinating.

To me, animal kingdom is the type of place that hits home with people who really love nature, culture, and the aesthetic experience of just being in a place. The rides and shows, for me, are wonderful compliments to the primary experience.

I think that's why some people view animal kingdom is a half-day park where others of us can't imagine trying to do it in less than a full day.

Again, that's not a good or a bad thing, it's just a better fit for certain types of people.

So there you go! For some people animal kingdom is an absolutely positively unmissable park. For other people I can completely understand why it's a half-day or or maybe not even worth going.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I get passionate about the animal kingdom!

Ak is a great park. What's cool about it is that theres no other Disney park like it in the world.
I love Everest, Kali River Rapids, the Safari, The Lion King Show, and Nemo & Flights of wonder are fun as well.

I have never eaten TS at AK, but I know the Yak and Yeti QS is very good. Everyone also always raves about Tusker House.

As PPs have said, Rivers of Light (the new nighttime show) is opening very soon, and I think it would be open when you go...
I hear it's supposed to be great!

Have a wonderful trip!
