Yesterday I asked our DS if he knew he has an illness called autism. Son says yes I have heard the word. I asked him if he knew what it means. He said "yes, it means I am curious like curious george".

Ok, nuf said.

Cool!
Sounds like he's making an accurate comparison.

Just wait a few years; he will be telling you it is not an illness but a natural evolutionary genetic neurovariation. Sounds like he is very self-aware which is a great asset for him.

That is so cool.
I think I probably need to start talking to DD more. She knows that she has seizures and why, and that her meds help her brain work better, but I don't know that we've really talked about autism specifically w/ her. Thanks for inspiring me to start a dialogue.

I found a book on Amazon for DS4 to take to pre-school that is about Asperger's called "Understanding Sam" by Clarabelle van Niekerk and Liezl Venter. It's a really sweet story. I've read it with Ben a few times at home as well and we have talked about some of the themes in it. He is too young to understand the full implications of ASD but I think he really responded to reading about someone like him who 'gets frustrated' (as we call it).

My son is 5 and is currently being evaluated for Aspergers. I was wearing an autism awareness shirt with the puzzle pieces. He asked why my shirt had the puzzle pieces, and I explained it was for autism. He said, "Is that what I have?". Too cute, it is funny how he tells people he is special. It makes me wonder if he realized, before we did.

Sending hugs to everyone.
