He had ipod touch, e-ink kindle and laptop already. I know its not necessary, but would it be useful? I know it would be FUN, but it seems he has devices that do it all already. Any input

If s/he has never expressed interest, save your money. A college-age kid isn't a five year old who will be happy with anything - by that age we know what we will use and have space for.

iPads and tablets in general are not useful in a productivity sense, particularly since s/he already has iTouch for the apps/checking mail real quick on the go sense and a laptop. if s/he didn't already have the Kindle I could see the book angle but I really don't see the point of an iPad now. It's just a toy - not useful for productivity at all especially in light of what's already owned.

oh, there is interest. There is interest in anything that charges with a screen :rotfl: I just left it with him that "um - I don't think so" Now very slightly considering it. It would be a complete suprise. The kindle is something that could be sold.... not for true value, but it would still sell for something.

What's his major? Speech Path majors have lots of uses for it through the apps, A ton of my friends have gotten them and use them for therapy. That said I'm not sure a lot of other majors would have a use for the I-pad.

I just finished an online course with a digital textbook. I enjoyed being able to read it on my iPad, but perhaps a .PDF file can also be read on a Kindle?-- Suzanne

I have several students who bring them to class with the cases/built in keyboards. They are lighter than laptops and students love having the newest thing :rotfl2:. If he is assigned a lot of pdf readings, they are handy for that -- the sole reason I got one -- going green!

I'm sure he would use it! Does he NEED it, that is another story entirely.
