my fiance and I are considering joining up while we are in disney for our wedding this june. I do have a question though. I received a card in the mail for free vacation or credit of at least 1500.00 toward the membership with the membership starting at 14,250. I also checked on this a couple of years ago myself and they were giving big discounts for signing up during your stay at the park. I am wondering which way would give me a better discount. Signing up before Feb. 28th and getting 1500.00 or waiting until june and signing up in the park.
I wish I would have saved my packet of info from a couple of years ago. What is the going rate for a down payment now?
I think I might have too many questions to get answered before feb. 28th. I might just be better off waiting until June.
Thanks!

To be blunt, waiting will probably just cost you money. The promotional discounts are due to change on Feb. 28th (they will almost certainly be less advantageous since the construction schedule is finally catching up with sales), and most of us wouldn't be surprised to hear of a price increase as well. The last increase was last April, so really they are due.

You will definitely NOT get a better deal offered to you while on-site. If anything, they will offer you the same deal offered to those who buy from home, but they will only give you 72 hours to make a decision. I guess they must want to close the deal quickly with those who actually meet one-on-one with a salesperson and have the advantage of actually touring the property.

You'll have to put at least 10% down--about $1450 cash (or credit card) for the minimum purchase.

If you're that serious, I'd call DVC and ask for a new info packet to be sent to you. They should still have your name on file, and can hook you up with the Guide to which you have been assigned.

If you've paid cash for your honeymoon accommodations this summer, you may be able to cancel and use that money toward DVC. The most common complaint you'll read here is folks who wish they'd have gone with DVC sooner. No sense spending hundreds or thousands on a cash room if that money can go toward a DVC down-payment.

to yourselves and any future children you may have! I agree with tj, don't wait, just do it if you can afford it. I wanted to do this on our honeymoon and we didn't, for whatever reason. We finally bought in 2004, but if we hadn't waited, we would have used DVC for four stays AND it would be paid for by now. I have found that the prices just keep going up, and the discounts are usually similar from promotion to promotion.
Congrats on your upcoming marriage!

If you buy directly from Disney and wait until your points are available to you in May 2005, Disney will give you a $10/pt credit. The current minimum contract Disney offers is 150 pts and that's the $1,500 credit. Or if you want to vacation between now and May, Disney will allocate their developers points to you that can use everywhere else but at SSR and you don't receive the $1,500 credit.
From what I've seen in the past, the discount or the DVC promotion in June will most likely be in line with what they're currently offering. IMO, whether you buy now or June, the price you pay from Disney will be about the same unless DVC raises it's price again which they did in late 2004. With that said, have you looked into resale contracts. I'm not sure what the going ROFR rate is but if you can find a loaded contract in the $75-$80 range, you'd be coming out way ahead. We purchased 250 pts @ VWL for $68/pt back in August 2004 just before the price hike and our contract came with 77 banked points. I wouldn't called that loaded but I've seen contracts with 2 full years banked since we purchased ours for not a whole lot more than what we paid, if you considered all the banked points that is. :p

I disagree.

Under the promotion being offered now, buyers receive their 2005 points AND get a $10 per point discount. By June, they will almost certainly be offering the standard "Magical Beginnings" promotion, which requires owners to sell back their first year's points (in this case, 2005) in return for the $10 per point credit.

The last price increase for new members was April '04--May '04 for existing members.

That's a really good idea that was mentioned above...if you are going to buy anyway, cancel your wedding Disney hotel reservation and use that $$ for your down payment, then stay in a DVC suite for your honeymoon.
