Hi all, I hear at YUL you don't need to collect your luggage if you are flying through YUL on a connecting flight to the US, is this true?? How have your experiences been traveling through this airport, it's going to be my first time connecting there any advice/comments about your experience there will be appreciated :)

From the airport web site:
If your flight originated in Canada and you have a boarding pass for a connecting flight to a U.S. destination, you must follow the U.S. connections signs, go through pre-boarding screening, and then go through U.S. Customs. Your checked luggage will be transferred automatically by the baggage handling system. Note, however, that U.S. Customs officers are authorized to recall your luggage, if necessary, for manual inspection. If the Customs officers do not yet have the information on your luggage at hand, you will be asked to proceed to the waiting area.

We find YUL our connecting airport of choice. Much easier to get around than Toronto and we've experienced extremely quick customs both ways. :)

I connected through YUL in 2009, and the wait for our luggage seemed long. But in 2010, it was lovely to just skip that part. They show you a picture of your bag, I believe the outside and an x-ray if I can remember correctly...

I got pulled aside for extra security screening and then we nearly missed our flight, but I spoke with a lady who then sent us through the crew line in customs and had the flight held for us.

Therefore, I LOVE this airport! Friendly staff, even the ones doing the extra screening were friendly. They were just doing their jobs, and I had nothing to hide, except that water bottle I forgot I'd bought past security in PEI but wasn't aloud to take again... oopsies!

Depending on where you fly in from, be prepared for a long walk and use the moving walkways. They do help.

Just a color pic of the bag as your go through US customs (on a computer screen that just shows the bags). Hence important to make sure when you checkin the right bags are with the right names.

Otherwise as mentioned above, much simpler than Toronto. You don't have to grab your bags between flights.

Good to know! :) Numerous times we've had the airlines mix my bag and hubby's bag with the tags.
