im going to get the plan....but im confused how does it work when u are at the restaurant....can u get anything off the menu as an entree or are their certain things that are tagged for ddp

In most cases there are no restrictions on what items you can order using the DDP (i.e., there is no special DDP menu). There are a few places where some items incur an up charge (e.g., the only one that comes to mind is the feast at Marakesh). Also, if an item says for "two people" then you will need two people using the DDP to order it (for example at the GF Cafe, the dessert sampler is for two people, so you can not order it if only one person is using a DDP credit). Finally, you cannot order an appetizer as your entree, nor can you substitute an appetizer for a dessert.

On the regular DDP you get one entree, one desert, and one fountain drink. On the deluxe DDP you get one appetizer, one entree, one dessert, and one fountain drink. The drink is usually limited to a coke product, coffee, or tea. Normally the specialty drinks do not count on the plan (there are a few exceptions, like the milk shakes at WCC).

What I was trying to say about the appetizers was that in most cases if you are on the DDP (regardless of the plan) you cannot select something from the appetizer menu and try to get that as your entree or dessert. There are a few exceptions, but in most cases they will not let you make that trade/substitution. If you are on the DxDP then you get an appetizer with each meal.

DDP does not include any appetizers, except if included in a prix fixe meal. (For example, you would get an app at CRT).

DxDP includes appetizers at every TS lunch and TS dinner. Not at CS meals, not at TS breakfasts.

It would not be worth upgrading to the DxDP if it's solely to get appetizers.

And the bigger issue -- becomes for people on the DDP -- What if they just want an appetizer as their meal. This should be a no-brainer --- Why can't I order the $8 salad for my meal, instead of the $30 steak! But most Disney restaurants won't allow it. All due to how the DDP redeems credits in their computer.

And this is 1 of the reasons, that it can make a lot of sense for many people to skip the dining plan altogether.

In the past I have gotten a smoothie for a drink instead of fountain beverage at a TS restaurant. You just have to ask and see if they say yes.
