Confused re: annual pass effective date

I would like to purchase one or more annual passes for our trip this October. When do I need to buy it for it to be valid for an additional fall trip in 2015? Is it valid once first used? Valid on date of purchase? I'm a little confused on how it works. I would love to use the discounts for the upcoming trip.

It's not valid until its activated at the gate. In other words...you can buy it now but not activate it until October. If you purchase now, you will beat any price increases this year.

Just to chime in, I bought my AP like in June or so for my HHN trip last year, but didn't activate it till I got there, and the expiration date on it is for September, a year from when I used it to get into the parks.
