Confused about what MS just told me about extending a reservation at 7 months

We have 2 home resorts: BWV and OKW. At the 11 month window we only had enough points in each contract to book part of our stay at each. Today was my 7 month window. We booked January 1-4 at BWV and the 5-8 at OKW. I called this morning right at 9 since it was the 7 month window for January 1. The agent told me the 5-8 were available at BWV but in order to book them the whole vacation would have to be switched from an 11 month booking to a 7 month booking. To do this, they would have to cancel the nights of the 1-4 and re-book the whole thing. He informed me there was no availability the nights of the 1-3, so during the cancel/re-book process there would be a chance of losing those nights. I didn't want to risk it, so I told him I will just call back on June 5 to try to get the nights of January 5-8. Is this right though? The reservation would have to be cancelled, re-booked, and possibly lost?

Sounds right to me. Asking them to tag on to the first reservation is taking advantage of the 11 month booking window.

yes. your 7 month window using non-home pts for a jan 5 reservation doesn't open till june 5.

Just wait until June 5 to call to change the OKW nights to BWV if you don't want to risk losing the first few BWV nights you have already booked.

That's my plan. The agent said the nights of the 1-3 already have a long waitlist, but the nights of the 4-8 are "wide open." I'll just keep my fingers crossed that things stay that way for the next 4 days.

Thanks for the explanations. I guess it just surprised me that my reservation would have to be cancelled and re-booked when today is my 7 month window for January 1-8. I feel like this could lead to a lot of people being angry, disappointed, etc. if the agent doesn't clearly explain the possibility of the reservation being lost in the process. Guess there's always something new to learn.

It's only your 7 month window if all the nights were booked in the same booking category at the same resort. You actually have 2 separate reservations. That's why you have to wait until the 5th to change the OKW nights to BWV. You may recall that you couldn't make the original OKW reservation at the same time you made the BWV reservation, either.

I know you understand now, but I want to make sure that others do as well - which is why you posted in the first place. Thanks for sharing and good luck - sounds like you will get the reservation since the CM said the nights you need are "wide open".
