Confirmed Today: Saudi Arabia wins 2034 FIFA WC bid. Thoughts?

My DH has talked a little about the difficulty FIFA is having deciding who should host the North America WC final rounds, because cities aren't fighting enough, for the right to host. Which sounds to me like angst about the lack of kickbacks. So when he told me about the Iberian peninsula+Morocco (sounds cool) + some cities in South America for some made up reason (no, an anniversary isn't a good enough reason), followed by Saudi Arabia's expected bid, my reaction was... ah, they found the bribes they are looking for. Sportswashing doesn't come cheap.

2026 final will be in Dallas or Met Life stadium in NJ most likely. LA should be hosting the opening ceremony/match. Cities have already been picked to host matches with the USA getting most of them. Canada and Mexico won't get many anyway. Cities just want to be hosting sellout crowd matches (big named teams and not minnow teams) and that's where the arguments are happening.

2034 FIFA World Cup bid thread. Bids for the tournament have started to be announced, as Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 has announced its bid launch for the tournament this week.

I have mixed feelings on the bid to be honest. 🤷‍♂️

Other bids being explored:

Wow, Saudi Arabia must have been encouraged by the Qataris. I also have mixed feelings on SA but they were some of the same feelings I had towards Qatar.

I'll look at the other bids later but who they award it to will be curious. I'm actually really excited about the next one as I'll be able to go to a match or two at Gillette Stadium.

You're a soccer fan or just an international event fan?

Both, if I'm being completely honest. When I lived in Europe last year I was yelling at my TV in French cheering on Mbappé and I'm wearing the jersey of the Polish national team right now. So really huge soccer fan here.

My wife and I were seriously looking into volunteering at the Olympics next summer but there are a lot of hoops and we decided we didn't want to be around such massive crowds.

You could try to get involved in volunteering opportunities for Copa America 2024 which will be hosted in the USA next summer.

You know, if the dates line up with my schedule, I probably will. It's very exciting to be in the middle of things. Some of the most fun I've had watching a soccer match was when I was in Poland watching the Polish national team play at a bar.

I do wonder how many Americans and Canadians will attend the event 11 years from now?
