Will any mouse do? Can I just go pick one out at Target? Anything I need to know before I go???This is for my kids computer, a Gateway relic from 1997  My son has FINALLY beat the life out of the mouse. I need a new keyboard too but alas for another day.

Thanks for the info....

You shouldn't have any trouble at all... I have a computer from 1995 and I can find a mouse readily available for it. Just make sure you don't buy one that is USB ONLY. There are some out there but if you get one that doesn't say that you should be fine.

Pembo - my mouse died a couple of weeks ago. I went to WalMart and bought a cheapie $14.00 mouse. It works great! :D

Pembo, just about any mouse will do. I love mine, it's one of the optical ones. Next one won't have a cord either. :)

Just make sure you do not get a mouse that requires an operating system that you don't have. If you have Windows 95 on the PC, make sure the mouse works with 95. If you have 98 or better, most mice should work fine.

You have to look at the plug that goes into the computer, if it is small and round any non-usb mouse will do. If it is a rectangle that is an old "serial" mouse, might be a little harder to find.
If the computer is from 1997 it could be either.

Thank you all! I will detach the old mouse and take it with me to buy the new one AND I'll check the operating system. Need one for Win 95. Thanks everyone.
