Computer Guru question

Okay, we have a Toshiba laptop. We bought it in early Spring. It has been great. We had a free 60 days with Nortons security and then my DH installed Trend Micro. He likes this better than Nortons, don't know why, but does.

This morning while on the Dis, I noticed that I couldn't use my back arrows. Then it wouldn't go to my home page by clicking the little house any longer. Basically, to navigate I had to click on each page icons, but couldn't navigate using the tool bar icons at all.

My DH gets the idea to restore the computer's memory to a past date. So he does. Now it's working fine except it took Trend Micro off. When we go to download it again it says it can't because we need to uninstall Nortons. We have been trying all morning to uninstall Nortons, but it will not uninstall although it is not working either (we don't expect it to because we didn't renew).

Does anyone know what could be wrong with my computer or how to fix it? I really hate using it without security.

For the record, I am not that knowlegable about computers, so please speak to me like a 3rd grader when trying to explain this.

Not a guru but might be able to help!

First, check to see if Norton Antivirus is still listed in your programs. Go to the Start Menu, then Control Panel, then Programs. See if there is anything there under Norton or Symantec. If so, then click on "remove program" and follow the prompts.

If the program is not listed, then go to Symantec's website and try one of their removal tools.

If none of those help, try calling Toshiba. Since the program was pre-installed, they might be able to offer suggestions. We have a Toshiba laptop and have found their customer service quite helpful.

Good luck!

It isn't uncommon when doing a restore to have some issues with programs that come with expiring licenses. If Norton is showing up in your add/remove programs like mentioned above but it isn't letting you uninstall it try to do a repair first then uninstall it.

If you guys are paying for Trend Micro I would switch to a free AV program. Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG, and Avast are all free and just as good as any pay for AV. Unless you are running an enterprise there is no reason to pay for Anti-Virus protection.

Thanks guys! I will try that, but we are only prompted to uninstall/change, doesn't give us a prompt to repair. I'll go try again. Then if that doesn't work I'll give my DH the link for the company.

I think next time we'll go with the free protection. I'm going to save the links. Thanks!

ETA: Got it fixed and Trend back on! Thanks for the links!

Just for future reference-Norton has a nasty tendancy to leave registry keys when you uninstall it-the problem can be resolved by deleting the registry keys-but thats tricky business and you have to know which ones to delete or you can screw things up pretty badly. I have even had difficultly installing a new version of Norton after removing an old one because of this ( removing a pay version to install a site licensed version)
