Computer Docking Stations? And another question-engraving laptop?

I ordered DS17's computer for college yesterday. We ended up getting him a Dell Studio with an i7 core and a bunch of other stuff I don't understand . We also got him a monitor and keyboard and I wanted to get him a docking station but, none of the one's on the Dell site got very good recommendations so I didn't order one. I think it would be easier all around to have one, plus I would think that while his computer was locked in the docking station it would be more secure.

I am looking for suggestions for a docking station-or if it is a waste of money that is helpful as well. The Dell ones on the site said they were for Latitudes so I wasn't sure if they would work with the Studio too.

You may want to consider a port replicator instead of a full blown docking station. Very similar in that only one connector needs to be attached to connect all of his peripherals including his monitor, but less bulky and space saving at the same time. I used only use Dell laptops at work and I always asked for a port replicator instead of a whole dock with monitor stand.

I had to look up what this was and it does sound more like what we are looking for. I don't see him needed ports for external hard drives, etc. Any suggestions on a brand to buy?

I just thought of another question-did anyone engrave their college student's laptop in case it was stolen? Does that void any warranty?

We all have Dell docking stations for our laptops at work and none of us have had a single issue with them. I like it. I don't use an additional keyboard, I prefer the laptop keyboard, but my colleagues all use wireless keyboards with theirs.

Now the laptops having issues are another story...
