Hello.
I'll be bringing my laptop. What cables are necessary to hook up to their system? Is it a standard USB cable? or something else? I hear they have cables there, but wanted to make sure i had the proper adapters or additional cables if necessary...
Thanks
mark

There should be one in the closet in a bag on a hanger. But it is basically the standard cable. If there isn't one in your room, you can contact Housekeeping to get one.

They will supply an ethernet cable. It is short - I always bring a 30 or 50 footer from home so I can work anywhere in the unit.

More specifically, it is a standard Ethernet cable. You might consider bringing a much longer one.

In our 1BR at BCV, the only place to connect was on the small table next to the kitchen area, but our kids were trying to sleep in the sofa bed...would have loved to have another connection in the bedroom.

I don't remember where it was in the 2BR at SSR, but I don't remember it being at the table.

Edit: forgot to add...some bring a small travel wireless router, which solves the cable problem. I need to remember to look for one...

At SSR there is no port in the kitchen area; it is in the master bedroom of the 1 bedroom part (and I assume in the studio part). A travel router makes life much easier.

Can anyone recommend a decent (yet cheap) travel router?

A lot of people like the Apple Airport Express, but like a lot of Apple products its not the cheapest on the market.

I'm looking at this D-Link one which is a lot cheaper, but I'm going to ask some colleagues who travel for work and see what they may think.

At present the online Apple store has refurbished Airport Express units for 85.00. Shipping is free.

I've purchased several refurbished products from Apple. They all come with the same warranty as a new item. No risk and you save a few dollars.

Newbie question - Will the Apple router work if your laptop is XP or Linux?

Yes...its supports the normal wireless standards.

I think the early Apple Airports (and I'm talking the originals) needed a Mac to at least configure them. I don't believe that has been true for years though.

I've had the same great experience.

There is nothing OS-centric in routers. They all talk TCP-IP so any computer, using any OS will work fine. That's how the internet started.

I want to remind you of something mentioned on a previous post...remember to look in the closet for the cable. I kept looking in the desk drawer and then finally found it in the closet!
