We are planning on transferring points from a fellow DVC'r for an extended-family vacation in 2012. We are thinking of going the first or second week of June.

The "transferer" has a June UY so we will be transferring his 2011 UY points into our account and banking them. My question is: We will also need to transfer in his 2012 UY points....when can we do that transfer? If it is not until June 1, 2012, then it wouldn't work since it will be about a week before our travel dates. Can we transfer in the 2012 UY points at 7 months before our vacation? We can't transfer 2010 and 2011 because they will expire before our travel dates. How can we make this work?...Or is it not possible?:confused3 We have a Feb UY so how would that effect the "one transfer per UY" rule? In addition, our points are at AKV and his are at OKW. We're still not sure which one we are going to stay at, but we are planning on waiting until 7 months out to make our reservations anyways. That way, we can combine our points. FWIW, we're going to do 2BR's and studios, not GV's.

Any ideas?

I thought you could not transfer borrowed points? You can only have one transfer in or out per year in your Use Year. From what I read in your post, I don't think you can do it.

Here is some info I took from one of Caskbill's posts that should help you:
---------------------
The transferred points must be in the correct use year for your vacation dates.

Best example is to use a summer date. Suppose you wanted something middle of June, 2010. If you got points from someone with a February Use Year month, then they would need to be 2010 points because they would be good for any vacation 2/1/10 thru 1/31/11, which covers your desired June 2010 dates. But if you got someone with points from an October Use Year Month, they would need to be their 2009 points since that would be good for any vacation 10/1/09 thru 9/30/10, which again covers your desired June 2010 dates.

If you need to make a reservation prior to the 7-month window, then the points must have a home resort for the resort you wish to reserve. If you won't be making your reservation until within 7 months, then the transferred points can be from any home resort.

You can definitely transfer points from both 2011 and 2012. As to timing, you can also do it before the UY actually starts. I transferred points in Sept 07 that were Apr 08 UY, which I banked for a May 09 vacation.

What I can't tell you is how far in advance you can transfer. It may still be too early to transfer the 2011 points, much less the 2012 points, as the member transferring is currently in their 08 UY.

You will have to call MS and if you like the answer, be ready to transfer quickly while on that call. If you don't like the answer, call back and try another CM. Just a guess, but I would be surprised if you didn't need to wait until you are both at least in your 2010 UY before you can transfer 2012 points.

I am pretty sure that you cannot transfer borrowed points. We are trying to figure out if we can transfer 2011 UY points into my account (and then BANK them so they don't expire until May 31, 2013) and then, when we are eligible for another transfer, do the transfer of 2012 UY points which will also then expire May 31, 2013.

Since our tentative travel dates fall in the beginning of June 2012, would we even be able to acquire the June 2012 points at 7 months BEFORE?:confused3 I know that if they were MY points to begin with, I would be using 2012 UY points to make a June 2012 reservation, even though I wouldn't "get" them until June 1. I know it would seem like they would then be "borrowed" points, but since our vacation would fall in June 2012, they would actually be "current" points for 2012. I guess my question is, at what point do points become transferable? Is it the first day of the UY?

Yes you can bank your friend's 2011 UY points & they can be utilized for a stay from June 1 2012 through May 31 2013. But that transfer of their 2011 UY points is transferred into your 2011 UY so that is the one transfer for your 2011 UY.

I'm not an expert on transfers but the problem I see is the "2nd transfer" you will need to do . . . because 1st Transfer of your friend's 2011 UY points will be into your 2011 UY because you need to make the reservation for June 2012 at 7 month booking window which is NOV 2011....Like I said I don't have all that much experience transferring points but this is my understanding.

I believe you will need to wait until first day of your 2012 Use Year to get another transfer of points in - Feb 1 2012 - I think MS will allow your friend to transfer their 2012 UY points then even though technically their 2012 UY doesn't begin until June 1 because the reservation you want to utilize those points for will be June 1 2012 or later. Even though it has the appearance of borrowing in reality what you said makes more sense - those June 2012 UY points are not being used for a reservation before June 1 2012 so that is not borrowing but would be current UY points for that June reservation.

I know there have been other threads here discussing a transfer of UY points before the actual date that the transferred UY points begins on in order to take advantage of booking opportunities, and I will try to see if I can turn that up and post link here for you.

Best wishes :goodvibes

Thanks, Suzanne!

We're in no big hurry, but we definitely want an idea as to how many points we will need. We already know that it will include at least 2 UY. The owner we are dealing with has even offered to borrow into his 2013 UY if needed. That would mean that we would have to rent the reservation from him, though. I'd rather not have to bother him with the arraingements for 14-15 people. My parents have generously offered to pay for all of us to go. It will be me and my 2 siblings, our spouses and our children. Currently, there are 6 grandkids, but my sister is planning for another addition before we go:woohoo: . We're planning on doing a 2BR and 2 studios. That way, if someone backs out, we can just drop a studio. I really doubt that will happen except in case of an emergency. My sister and DSiL are already starting their planning! Being a mega-planner myself, I am still :cloud9: , but as the dreams start becoming reality, I foresee me shifting towards :scared1: !
