Gate-checked means you can take the child in the stroller all the way to the gate and down to the door of the airplane. There, you collapse the stroller and leave it for airplane personnel to put below. When you get off the plane, the stroller is brought back up and you can put the child in it to right from the door of the airplane, throughout the airport, to your ride, etc. Instead of checking it at the desk when you check-in, you check it at the airplane gate. You do need to obtain a special tag from the terminal gate before you load the plane. I wasn't concerned about our luggage count since for the 3 of us we only had 3 suitcases plus the stroller and we could've had 9.
