Compared air prices - CDN to US

I think..the next year will see many airlines closing up shop as they really are not charging enough. I don't like to pay the AC prices anymore than the next person--but I am savvy enough to understand that if my car costs almost $100 to fill and that lasts me 540KM tops...filling an Airbus, Boeing or similar Aircraft must be staggering..never mind all the additional add on costs. We have been delusional for too long and enjoyed the ride for probably much longer than we should have...my 2 cents for what it's worth:confused3

That's true but the taxes and "fees" here in Toronto, PIA specifically are far higher than anywhere else. My parents went to the DR last winter from the K-W airport and it was cheaper than PIA because of the higher fees the GTAA charges.

Our flights in Aug are $200pp from BUF. The days of the $39 fares are long gone but still pretty good.

I still can't believe the difference!!!

We are heading down to WDW end of August. We flew westjet last Dec the cost pp was $449 for a total of $1350. Thank god we had airmiles so we only paid the taxes. The same flight as of today for Aug is $3505. It was higher when we started to plan this trip back in early May. We started looking at Buffalo but we decided to add 2 days to the beginning of our trip and drive down to Grove City PA and do some shopping (TAX Free on cloths). We will then drive the 45 mins to Pittsburgh. SWA non stop all 3 tickets $606. That a saves of $2900!!. Total cost of our trip for 3 plus an infant is $2013 with free dining, park tickets, staying at POP, and flight. That is just crazy.

What a great idea. I love the idea of throwing in a side trip to Grove City. It's an easy drive down there too.

Well, Toronto also has the highest landing fees of any Airport in the World so that is reflected in the pricing. Now, why they do...remains to be seen because the Airport here most certainly is not one of the best in the World!

I just think sooner or later--prices will be where they really should be--albeit higher.

I feel sorry for the Canadian carriers because if all things were equal, they would probably be able to compete quite nicely.
As an example, the image below is a sample flight I checked out (4 passengers).
The top image is Air Canada (not a bad base price by the way,,,,even by AC's standard :goodvibes ) and the second image below that is SWA for the exact same dates.
If you look at the taxes and fees for AC you'll see its about $213 which is added to the base fare of $254.
For SWA the base fare is $243 (certainly not the best SWA rate I've seen....but OK nonetheless) plus taxes and fees of about $40.
This is the killer ..the taxes and fees.
By flying out of BUF you can avoid US Transportation Tax,US Agricultural Tax,Air Travellers Security,US Facility charge,GST,US Immigration fee,NAV Canada fee,Airport Improvement fee.
Some of the fees you cannot avoid (no matter where you fly from)include Fuel Surcharge,Sept 11th Security fee(or similar)taxes and passenger facility charge.
Until such time as the Canadian government and the GTAA etc drop their exhorbatant landing fees and taxes etc ,the ever increasing fuel surcharge will indeed eventually drive companies out of business or drop certain routes or frequency at best.

It cheaper to flyout of Minneapolis than Winnipeg. We paid $1100 for 4 pp our of Minneapolis, To fly out of winnipeg would have been $3700. Even taking into account the drive it's still worth it to me!! More money for souvenir's and the outlet malls!! :cool1:
