Companion Fare with West Jet Credit Card?

Hi friends,

I have been scouting out flight times and prices and am wondering how you go about doing the companion fare available with the West Jet Credit Card. The terms and conditions fine print say something about having a voucher and using that at time of booking the full fare ticket. Do you request a voucher? Did we get one with the card and I somehow missed it? Or do you just phone into book your flight and ask for a companion fare ticket also?

Hi!
First, you have to have the WestJet World Elite MasterCard to get the companion flight. The WestJet MasterCard does not get the companion flight benefit. After the card has been used once, you will get a code emailed to you, and it will show up in your account on-line. Then, it renews every year afterward on that anniversary date. You have to phone in to redeem. The agents are always awesome and very helpful.

It will be posted to your WestJet Rewards account. You'll need to phone in the reservation, and the agent will be able to see the voucher when you give your rewards number. I believe it takes a couple of months to post the first voucher, so if you're not seeing it, that might be why.

Be aware that the credit card holder and the companion will be booked together on one reservation, and any other travellers in your party will be booked on a second reservation. The reservations will be linked, and all will still receive the free checked bag, so it's usually not a big deal. But it can be a bit slow to book (faster if everyone has WestJet number!), and might be an issue if a single adult is travelling with multiple small children.

Like the other said, if you log into your Westjet Rewards Account, you will be able to find the voucher there. Log in, then choose Westjet Rewards from the menu on the left, then Vouchers. It will list all the vouchers you have on your account and their expiry dates. Then just call in to book.

Beware...we used this card to book the companion flights. I had the card, and I booked the companion flight for one of my boys. My husband has a separate card, so he booked his companion flight for another of our boys. We have 3 boys. So the third boy ended up on his own reservation AND THEY DID NOT LINK THE RESERVATIONS!!! We only found this out when we went to check in 24 hours before, and learned that my 9 year old (a minor, hello?) was sitting all alone elsewhere on the plane. They could only change it at the counter at the airport, so we were stressing out. I had been assured the reservations were linked, but nope. So beware and be extra vigilant with those extra bookings making sure they are linked.

I believe you will receive the next voucher on the anniversary of your membership of the card. I received/activated my Westjet World Elite MasterCard on July 22/16 and have used my initial companion voucher. Therefore, I will receive another companion voucher on July 22/17. I believe there are also dollar targets to receive a companion voucher, ie: spend $4,000.00 and get a voucher.

This had me concerned since I did not use my card much. I phoned RBC last night and the rep told me that it just had to be. renewed after the year is up. I hope that he is correct. I annotate find the original literature to read the fine print.

We got ours last spring and used the companion voucher. Now I'm trying to decide whether to keep the card for another year or not. I really don't like being tied to a specific airline. The last 2 times we flew it wasn't with Westjet and we have another awesome travel card...

It depends on when you travel. If it is high season it works to the cardholders benefit. We are travelling over Christmas and it is nice to get a $99 filght

Absolutely. I've used it over March Break for the past few years and it's paid for itself over and over.

I have to think long and hard whether to keep my other travel cards (Avion: Spend $35k to get a $750 flight on any airline; Amex: Spend ~$25k for the possibility of an Aeroplan flight), or spend $0, a $99/year fee and $99 for a companion flight.
