Come keep me company

I just want to know where they are getting all these guns.....

It isn't all that hard to find guns/buy them/steal them.

Guns are pretty easy to get here. A staggering amount of parents in our district are active gang members. We had one student a couple of years ago who got in trouble for drawing gang symbols on a locker. When his father came up he started yelling at his son. Sounds normal, right? The problem was this guy was yelling at his son for disrespecting the gang. Apparently the kid didn't draw the symbol the right way. The parent then asked the principal for a marker so that he could draw it the correct way.

I think they are almost done checking kids. My lunch starts in twenty minutes though so it looks like I'll only have my afternoon classes today.

edited to add: One of the kids said that it was his grandmother's gun.

hmmmm...the school by me has actual police officers in the building....maybe I should be a little scared......
Our school has a police officer on duty, too. However, she gets assaulted fairly often. It's not like I want the police officer to be able to use excessive force or anything, but I don't want to see the crap beat out of her. When I was a kid, a police officer's uniform commanded some respect. We never would have dreamed of hitting an officer.

Another gun, OMG....that is so scary. I can't believe about the parent yelling about disrespecting the gang, you are stronger person than I could be. I would be out by now.

Well, it seems to be over for now. I had my third period class for about five minutes. I've never seen kids switch classes so quietly before.

Thank you all for keeping me company. I normally try not to talk about the negetive things in my school. There's already enough negative stuff out there about urban schools, I try not to add more. I just had to have a way to get it out today though. When I started the thread I honestly thought that the lockdown would be about something silly like a problem in the bathroom. I have to say that most of my kids are wonderful. Those that aren't are usually in need of some serious help. I can't imagine living through some of the things that have happened to my kids and I don't blame some of them for their behavior.

In the ten years that I've been teaching, I've only felt threatened once. I had a kid threaten to beat me up. Instantly there was a wall of boys in front of me basically telling him that if he wanted me he'd have to go through them. That was the only day I've ever cried in class. I was so moved by the fact that these kids were willing to put themselves in danger to protect me. There's this weird line drawn with a lot of our kids. Some of them have no problem cussing us out but won't let someone else disrespect their teacher.

Have you been blessed yet? I must bless you for teaching in such conditions. It shows you really care! Teachers are the best and are so underappreciated!

Yeah, school security guards tend to be just there as a presence. "Stop, or I'll throw my keys!"
Sorry but that made me LOL :rotfl:

Stay safe OP :grouphug:

Well, I finally got the whole story. Apparently a group of kids came into school late reeking of weed. They brought the police in with dogs and searched the kids. I guess a few had to be strip searched. So while they were looking for drugs they found the first two guns.
