My parents and I are both thinking of purchasing points from DVC. We were wondering if we could link the 2 ressies together and combine points to get bigger accomidations. we would like to plan a large family gathering? Is this possible? Also are we better off buying direct from Disney or a resale? For example.. if we purchase points on resale for OKW are we buying a partially used contract? When does the lease for OKW end? Or should we stick to SSR and purchase new?

I am so confused?

I can help a little....My sister and I just combined points for the GV at BWV. We did it on a conference call together to MS. It does not have to be done that way. It was available to us so we did it.
We bought our VC new so I can't answer which is better. I do think that if you buy resale it would be a partially used contract

When you say, "Partially used" don't think you are getting a damaged contract! You are buying the OKW points that expire in 2042 compared to 2054 with SSR. Those OKW points are still worth the same as those SSR points are today.

There are also the advantages of no closing costs with buying direct from DVC compared to paying for them through a resale. Also some financing benefits through DVC unless you have your own financing already set up.

If you want OKW - you have to buy resale, as I don't think Disney is currently selling OKW points these days.

The usual rule is buying where you want to stay because of the 11/7 booking windows.

We own at BCV, but we have made ressies at BWV & WLV as close as 2 months out without problems.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your quick responses. I am ready to buy but my hubby needs convincing. I guess there is always one in every family. Helps from going bankrupt. Ha ha.

I know the contract would not be "damaged", But twelve years is a long time to lose. I just have to figure out how the cost of those lost years comparers to the cost of buying new.

These are the questions my husband asks and I need to be prepared.

I hate numbers!!

OKW averages around $70 per point, and SSR is currently selling for either $89 or $94 a point. That is your cost for the lost years.

There is always one that is the "tougher sell." It is also my hubby or else I would have already added on a SSR contract! If you need to convince him, try renting a ressie from a current member and see how fast he falls in love with the DVC resorts.

There is also the elusive Eagle Pines Resort that should be coming along in a few years to consider...

Good luck & enjoy!

If you are under 30, those 12 years might be a bigger consideration than the amount saved per point. We were near 50 when we purchased, so if we were to buy now when we are closing in on 60, the 12 years means very little. If you are watching money closely though, you might want to purchase a small OKW contract now, and add on at SSR later. It might be possible to do a SSR resale in a year or so.

Another option is buying both contracts together so that you have both sets of names on both contracts. This is great within happy and close families; I would love to have my folks listed on ours, and I completely trust them in matter like this. In many families, however, I realize that this is not always possible; ones where ppl hold grudges for a long time can be especially problematic.

So, depending on family dynamics this may or may not be possible. I expect the safest thing to do would be to take the suggestion of earlier posters like pigelet. good luck!

We found it to be very easy to use two contracts for one large room. My father-in-law just transferred their points to our account with a quick call to member services, then I followed up with a call to make the reservation using my account, which then contained all the points.

My parents, who are older than my in-laws, decided they wanted to own, but didn't want to deal with the "hassles" of ownership. They did an add-on of 175 points to our existing contract and I make their reservations and just "bill them" their portion of the dues each year. And, while I really didn't want to think of it this way, it's one less thing we'll have to deal with when they pass away because it's all already in our name.

As another poster said, as long as the family dynamic is good, it's really very simple and a call the DVC can probably give you other options we're not even aware of.

Thanks to all for your help. You have al given some graet advice. Maybe I will try to rent a DVC resort this October and see if the "magic" happens.

Thanks,
Dayna

Thanks for asking this question, I too was curious if you could combine points on a conference call. The day after we purchased SSR points, my In-laws purchased too, so it would be a great way to "split" points.
