we both had one many years ago we were not put out .. now we hear they put you out any one ever had this done with out being put out ? were wondering if we had some other kinda test?

You may have had a flexible sigmoidoscopy--that only goes 1/3 to 1/2 the way up your colon. They do not sedate you for it (though they should).

I've never heard of a non-sedated colonoscopy.

I had a colonoscopy and was lightly sedated for it. The only person I konw who had one and wasn't sedated was Katie Couric who did it on the Today Show. :earseek: I don't think I'd want to go through a full colonoscopy while wide awake.

I was sedated, but awake and aware for my colonoscopy. I had no pain, but watched along on the monitor for the entire procedure.

This is what I had and I can assure you, I will never have it again.. Worst yet, AFTER the procedure they barely mentioned in passing that for people with IBS (which I've had for years) it is much more painful.. Thanks - I could TELL that while it was being done... :furious:

I was out when I had my colonoscopy. The worst part was the prep--no solids for 3 days prior and then the additional meds to clean out your system. Not fun but not that bad.

DH was awake for his; he'll be asleep for the next one. I was "asleep" for mine, but I awoke during the procedure; it was quite painful. (Because they weren't being as gentle as they would have been had I been awake, and I wasn't prepared to feel anything, if that makes sense.)

I've been out for all of mine. I do remember a little from the first one.

I have to have another one next month and I will be out for that.

I've never had a Flex Sigmoidoscopy. I always say it's like going in for a mammogram and only having one side done. Get the colonoscopy.

I chose sedation for my colonscopys, flex sigs, and upper endoscopys HOWEVER it is not mandatory and people do it without sedation. I have a friend that gets them often due to a rare disease and she is tried of giving up an entire day each time to recover from sedation so she goes without. It's slightly painful, and very very uncomfortable, but it was worth it to her to not lose a day everytime.

I don't get them that often to worry about a day missed.

My insurance company, however, considers sedation on a colonoscopy to be elective and doesn't cover it!

When I had mine done, it was scheduled for 8am. I knew I was only going to be lightly sedated, so I just made sure I didn't get much sleep the night before (not like I could sleep sitting on the toilet!) and when they sedated me, I was out like a light. I woke up once during it, had no pain, saw the monitor, asked for a picture and went back to sleep. Woke up in recovery. And I still have the picture. :)

Exactly the same for me.

I was given two medications: One that would sedate me but yet I was suppose to be able to respond to commands (roll over, etc), and another drug to blank my memory of the procedure. When I first returned from the procedure, My DW said she asked me if I felt anything. She said I responded it was cold. I don't remember saying that. Procedure was a piece of cake. the prep was NOT fun (bring a good book into the restroom  )

I was out for mine. My doctor used two drugs for putting me out. One was a twilight sleep drug and the other was more powerful. The minute they stopped the more powerful one I was able to wake up. It also made for no after effects like headache. I have to have a colonoscopy done every year due to family history. The only bad thing is the prep. Everything else was easy.

DD had a colonoscopy when she was 14. The gave her the "Twilight" drug. After the procedure, I was sitting with her. She suddenly looked at me and said "Mom, why do they keep playing "Deep In The Hundred Acre Woods?". I can tell you that I wasn't hearing anything of the sort. Of course, later, she was very embarrassed when I told her what she'd said.

They knocked me out for it..the ady before is just soft food like jello etc...then you prep that night and the next day you have it..I have never heard of not eating for THREE days!

I had what the doctor referred to a twlight sleep. A light sedation where you are in and out.

However, it is not the procedure that is bad but the prep. I hope they change that for my next time.

I had one done recently and don't remember a thing. :thumbsup2

i had twilight - same thing i had when they pulled my wisdom teeth. i was awake, but not really alert. i couldn't feel anything.

Similar experience. I could have only liquids, jello the day before. Then, the night before, I had to have that yucky stuff in a bit of water to drink...that started the flushing out process that night. Then a lot to drink before bed, up at 5 to have another dose of yucky stuff in even less water, back to the bathroom and to the hospital at 9 a.m. Knocked me out, woke up shortly after and wanted nothing except a drink.
The thirst the morning before the proceedure was the absolute worst of it. I thought I was going to die of thirst. As soon as I got to the hospital, they started a drip and I felt better within about 10 minutes, but I was still pretty thirsty.
Had the flex-sig, not doing that again!! Ouch! Now, I have to have the colonoscopy done every 4-5 years.
