First, let me start off by saying that I had a colonoscopy yesterday and I now have in my hand a photo of a very healthy colon.:)

The reason for my posting a PSA about colonoscopies is because it was a long road to finally getting one done and if I can help put to ease even just one person's fear, apprehension, anxiety or whatever it is that may be holding anyone back from having one done, then this post will be worth it.:)

I've never actually feared the colonoscopy. Like most people, it has always been the dreaded prep that has hindered me.:scared: Nine years ago, at the age of 50, I dutifully followed my doctor's orders and scheduled my first colonoscopy. The night of the prep, I drank one glass and promptly threw it up. I tried again with the same results. I could not get the horrible tasting stuff to stay down. It made me gag and made me sick to my stomach. I called and cancelled the following morning's appointment.

I let it go for a couple of years and tried again, only to have the same thing happen. After that, I just put it off and didn't bother trying again. We had a lot of life changes (kids going off to college, a move across country, grandkids coming into our lives, and so and so on) and I kept shoving the thought of another try at a colonoscopy to the back of my mind.

Well, last September, after moving and finding new doctors, I told myself I really need to get this done. Okay, it was actually the new doctor that made me promise to get a colonoscopy.;) The gastroentrologist he referred me to, suggested I give the pills a try instead of drinking all that nasty prep stuff. Now, I don't want to sound like a whiner, but I HATE taking pills of any kind. Always have! I've always had trouble swallowing pills, but I figured since I couldn't do the liquid prep, I'd try the pills.

After getting home and thinking about it some more, and reading horror stories on the internet about the pill prep, I ended up (once again) cancelling my colonoscopy appointment. That made three for three attempts. Last month, I told myself this was getting ridiculous, and I was so mad and disappointed in myself, and knowing that I was quickly closing in on 60 years of age, I HAD to get this done. So, as a 59th birthday present to myself, I made another appointment with the same gastroentrologist. I told him I was willing to try the liquid prep again. He insisted the new preps are nothing like they used to be ten years ago, so I scheduled an appointment for a colonoscopy.

I told myself this is it. I had to get the prep down and get this over with. This prep consisted of 4 Duculax pills and a mixture of Gatorade and Miralax. Again, not to be a whiner, but I HATE Gatorade and I have an incredibly sensitive stomach. My doctor said I could put the Miralax in any liquid, as long it wasn't red or purple in color. So I chose to mix it with lemonade. He also insisted I would not taste or smell the Miralax and it would not change the consistency of the drink. I didn't fully believe him, of course!:rotfl:

Well, he was right!:thumbsup2 The night of the prep I took the pills (one challenge down) and drank the mixture. I couldn't taste or smell the Miralax, and I'd have to say the only thing it did to the taste of the lemonade was to make it a little less lemony. I got the prep down! I took longer pauses in between each glassful and several times, I stopped for 45 minutes or so between glasses. Now, for full disclosure here, I didn't drink the last 8oz glass. I could tell, it wasn't necessary, if you know what I mean.;)

To make an already long story short, my husband drove me to my appointment yesterday morning, I had the colonoscopy and I can't tell you how happy I am that I did it!

My anxiety over the prep was a thousand times worse than the actual procedure! For anyone dreading it like I was, please don't! The preps available nowadays are really MUCH, MUCH better than the ones ten years ago! And, the colonoscopy itself was a breeze! The worst part was waiting for them to come get me from my little cubicle. I was all prepped with the IV and knew I was next. I could hear doctors talking to others who had just had the procedure and they were telling the patients they could now go enjoy breakfast, and I just wanted that to be me already! Once they took me to the room where they did the colonoscopy, all I remember was them telling me they were giving me some oxygen and the next thing I remember, I was waking up and being offered a small glass of water.:thumbsup2 I did not remember anything from the procedure and never felt a thing!

The doctor came in and discussed my results with me and my husband, I was told I could get dressed and go enjoy breakfast, and we were out of there! He also told me my prep was EXCELLENT! I didn't tell him I never finished the last glass! He had also stopped by to see me briefly while I was waiting in my cubicle before the procedure. He said he was happy to see that I actually was there. He wasn't convinced I would show up!:rotfl:

So, it took four attempts and nine years, but if I can do this, I feel anyone can! A few tips that got me through the prep:

The biggest one is to eat lightly at least three days before the colonoscopy. It made the prep so much easier to work. Try sucking on a lemon or lime right before and right after drinking a glass of the mixture, and suck on hard candies in between glassfuls. Ice cubes on the tongue help, too. Do something to take your mind off the prep. I spent the evening working on a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle while watching The Golden Girls. Worked for me!:)

Anyway, I hope I've helped lessen someone's anxiety over a colonoscopy and the prep involved! Thanks for following along with my long post!

:thumbsup2

I'm overdue for one myself (last went 6 years ago, family history). Need to get it done.

Totally agree!! MH's mother died very young from colon cancer so colonoscopies are a common occurrence in my home. Thanks for putting this out there.. I know the process can be super intimidating but it is so critical to get it done.

The miralax prep is wonderful. My GI didn't offer it to me when I had my last colonoscopy. I had a prescription for the usualy Go-lytely, so I called and asked if they had instructions for a miralax prep. The office was happy to send me those instructions, and the prep was reasonably pleasant.

They had at least 4 different sets of prep instructions - so if one is difficult for you, ask about alternatives!

Good for you luvflorida:thumbsup2 I was pretty worked-up over having this done but I learned that the hysteria over this procedure is totally unnecessary. I didn't think the prep was any huge deal, worst part for me was being hungry. :)

My dad died young of colon cancer, so I had my first colonoscopy at 31 - did it for my birthday, too. My prep was the same as yours...miralax and gatorade (which I also hate) and then citric acid in the AM. The prep was easy for me - no "running the bathroom" like everyone had warned. I was not put under for the procedure...just some anti anxiety meds given to calm me, apparently.

I thought the prep and the procedure were painless and easy...and encourage everyone to get one...my dad would still be here today if he had gotten the recommended one at 50. Instead, we buried him at 51 - just 8.5 months after his tumor was found :(

I had to get one in August to diagnose my ulcerative colitis. I was 25. I also had the miralax Gatorade prep. The worst for me was not eating before and then having to drink all that liquid. I thought I was going to burst from drinking so much. Other than that not bad.

Had to get a stomach MRI two weeks ago w contrast fluid. -that- was worse prep than the colonoscopy. I must've been drinking what the OP had to the first time! Stuff made me gag so bad, I had to have a bucket near me during the MRI. I was miserable the rest of the day.

Thank you Luvflorida for your reassuring post. I need to schedule one this year and the prep was making me anxious. I am glad you got a good report. So just to be clear, the prep can be pills and miralax in Gatorade?

Thank you for posting this. I tell everyone I know.

I had another issue and at the age of 49, was scheduled for an upper GI endoscopy. My gastroenterologist told me, "Well, since you've got to be under anesthesia anyway, why don't we just go ahead and do your colonoscopy a year early and get it over with?" I agreed. I had the pills and, I won't lie, the prep sucked but I got through it.

When I woke up from the anesthesia, the doctor told me how lucky I was. I'd had a huge polyp and if I had waited another year and had my first at 50, I'd have had to wear a colostomy bag for the rest of my life. They caught it just in time.

I had another colonoscopy last year and now I don't have to go back for another two years. :thumbsup2 I'm pretty excited about that!

I had my third colonoscopy a few months ago. My prep was all pills at my request. I swallowed 4 pills with 8 ounces of water every 15 minutes for 1 1/2 hours. Then the next morning a few hours before the procedure I had to swallow 4 more pills with water. No problems at all!

I will definitely ask for the Miralax prep next time.

I have had 4 colonoscopies (have to have one every other year), and the first three were beyond miserable. I had the liquid prep, and I threw up every time near the end of the prep (my stomach CANNOT handle that much liquid anyhow, especially when it's only 15 minutes between some of the doses. Plus, it's the same prep for me as it would be for my over-6-foot, 230-pound brother-in-law. How does that make sense?). With my third colonoscopy, I was in tears and even reaching for the bottle would make my hands shake and make me retch. Awful.

Last year I asked for the pill prep, and it went slightly smoother. Those pills taste exactly the same as the liquid and dissolve super fast (so have water ready to follow the pills immediately). Next year I'll ask for the Miralax prep.

Just a heads-up, there are also various options for the anesthesia, and the newest (?) one, which they tried on my last year, makes you wake up pretty much instantly afterwards and you feel perfectly alert and clear-headed. The downside of that drug, though, is that you feel all the discomfort and (potentially) pain from the colonoscopy that had been masked by other versions of the anesthesia. After prior colonoscopies, I was rather woozy and sleepy for a little while after, and I also had zero filter, so every odd, seemingly drunken thought that popped into my head also came out of my mouth. My mom enjoyed it. :lmao:

I just had my third colonoscopy last month (I'm only 35) and it was my first time with the miralax/Gatorade prep. It was sooo much better then other preps! Glad you finally had it done (I put off this last one a few years, life just gets busy) and that you have a healthy colon :)

Yes, I was very excited to eat something, anything, after the colonoscopy! The day before the colonoscopy when only liquids are allowed, I wasn't really hungry. Maybe just thinking about taking the prep later that day curbed any thoughts of food! The days leading up to that day, though, were tough. I ate very little and was definitely hungry. But I'm glad I held off on big meals.:)

Honestly, I am awful about odd tastes and smells and anything that sets my stomach feely queasy.:headache: On top of that, I hate swallowing pills. My prep consisted of taking four Duculax pills, which to my relief, were teeny tiny. Originally, I only took three, because I was so afraid of the effect they might have on me. Then, the more I thought about it, I was afraid the prep wouldn't work, so half an hour later, I took the remaining pill. A few hours after that, I started on the 8, 8oz glasses of liquids. I mixed the Miralax with lemonade in a big jug, and poured out 8oz into a cup with a lid and a straw. I added ice to the cup after the 8oz were poured in. I can honestly say, it did not change the consistency of the lemonade, and there was no smell. The Miralax made the lemonade taste less lemony, but I sucked on a lemon before and after each gulp. After awhile it was more the volume of liquids that almost did me in, not the mixture itself. However, I took more time between glassfuls than the 10-15 minutes suggested.

It really went a lot better than I thought it would.

Now see, I could never do that prep! I've heard the pills are large and salty. Is that true? Either way, I'd never be able to swallow that many pills in that amount of time! I'm glad it worked for you, though!

I've also read that a split prep is now the desired way to go, although my doctor didn't prescribe that method. I've read that splitting the prep into two, 32oz sessions seems to provide better results than doing it all at once.

I am due for my third. Need to put that "on the list" to do this yr.

When I was 41, I needed an endoscopy and asked the GI doc since I was going to be under can you do a colonoscopy. She reluctantly agreed to it since my insurance did cover it.

Once it was complete, she said "you are lucky". We found a precancerous polyp and another polyp.

So yes, while it sucks, it is worth it.

OK, my question is, can you use some other flavoring than the lemonade one that comes with it? I like sweet flavors more than tart.

For the newer one it's four pills and a bottle of dissolvable miralax that you can mix with anything (clear liquids, except certain colored drinks). I hate Gatorade so mixed mine with iced tea. For the older ones that are one big prep thing with flavored mixes I wasn't allowed to mix it with anything else and had to chase every sip with water. I could never finish those without getting sick.

As a rectal cancer victor, I've had 5 or 6 colonoscopies over the past 8 years. I have a tremendous gag reflex. I can not drink the massive amounts of liquid. Any flavor at all hits me in the back of the throat and it's horrible. I had a new dr this year and he agreed to me using the pills. Throw the pill in and take a BIG drink of water and down it goes. I was on a liquid diet for 2 days instead of 1. Perfectly clear test. And the best part was I don't have to have another test for 5 years.

Sorry, I was asking about the other prep. Can I mix some other flavor besides the lemonade flavoring that comes with it (I've got Gavilyte - is that the same as the same as Go-lytely)?

I had my endoscopy done the same time as my colonoscopy. I had also been putting mine off for years so my first one was done at age 55. I hated the prep. I do not like gatorade and it was really hard for me to drink the 64 ounces..but I did it. I did have to run to the bathroom all night long so I barely slept. I also spent about 2 hours in the bathroom. I know I need to have another one sooner than normal due to finding 3 polyps which were all pre-cancerous. I think I will ask about the pills only...or mixing with something else. I could do ice tea or 7-up easily.

My endoscopy also found 3 more polyps..1 on my esophagus and 2 in my upper stomach. I do have to say since they dilated my esophagus and removed the polyps (and put my on prescription prilosec) I know longer deal with acid reflux every single night and I have had zero heartburn.

I wish I would not have been so chicken for the last 5 years.
