Colonoscopy Experience Yesterday (long)

Yesterday I had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy. I have had mild anemia and they were doing these procedures to see if I had a GI source of bleeding.

For any of you living in the mid-Atlantic states yesterday, you know we had a pretty good ice storm. I was worried sick about this storm and having my procedure cancelled, but the doctor's office assured me several times that they would be there NO MATTER WHAT! So, on Tuesday evening, I began my prep which, of course, had me up all night on the toilet.

At 4:30 a.m. (morning of my procdure), I get a phone call from the endoscopy center telling me that they were shutting down for the day due to inclement weather. OMG! I was beside myself. I phoned my doctor and he called me back and was able to get me into another hospital that he uses (he also had a procedure there later that day). Thank God for that man. He is a wonderful doctor.

So, me and my mom made our way through the YUCKY weather in her little Corolla. It was about a 40 minute ride. That was tough with the "prep" still working.

I got checked in and put in the bed. Then, they could not get an IV into me. I guess I was very dehydrated. It took two nurses and three different spots to get the IV in. I've had MANY surgical procedures and have never had a problem before, so I don't know why this was a problem. But it was very painful.

They finally wheeled me into the procedure room. They put some Demerol and Versed in the IV. I felt myself go under but I would not go all the way. They kept giving me more, but I woke up several times during the colonoscopy. It wasn't horribly painful, but I could feel it. When they did the upper endoscopy, I didn't wake up. I guess there was no pain associated with that so it didn't pull me out.

When I came to, I was very sick. Threw up there and on the way home (sorry TMI), despite the anti-nausea meds. My doc said he had to give me 3 times the amount of drugs that they give everyone. I was sick most of the evening and this morning is the first I've been able to eat.

Despite the bad experience, I do not have any bleeding in my colon. I had one small polyp, and diverticuli and that was it.

My stomach was a whole different story. I had some hyperplastic polyps in there (due to Prilosec usage), I had fresh bleeding in my stomach with no known source (no ulcers, etc), and my esophagus was inflamed. I am told I have GASTRITIS. I don't really know what it all means or why I have this. I was so out of it. My doctor upped my Prilosec dosage and I am to use Carafate for a month and go back to see him.

So, that was my story. If you know anything about gastritis or have had similar stomach experiences, please share!!

OMG!!!! What a horrible ordeal Christine.

That being said what is the deal with the "Prilosec usage"? I take Prevacid.
That is certainly something I am taking notice of.
Bleeding in your stomach! WTH is that about?

As far as the 1 small polyp in your colon was it "precancerous"? Mine was. What did they say about it?

Mystery Machine:

I have known for awhile that usage of PPIs can cause benign stomach polyps. If you visit any of the "heartburn" forums, many people who regularly use these meds develop them and are seen on endoscope. I have heard they disappear if you stop the meds.

The stomach bleeding is from the gastritis. There is no ulcer or anything. I guess the lining of my stomach is just raw and is bleeding. Not huge amounts or anything. I used to use ibuprofen an awful lot, but quit at the end of December due to developing an allergy to it. The doctor thinks that if the ibuprofen caused it, it *should* have cleared up by now.

The type of polyp (if I can remember) was not precancerous but they did remove it and biopsy it so I will know more on Monday. He seemed to think it was one of the benign type of polyps.

OK...my polyp was precancerous to to the point where my doctor told me had I not had this done I would have had colon cancer before I turned 50.:scared1: I did this last year in March.
She told me to tell my siblings to go get a colonoscopy, which I did. Of course they didn't but at least I told them.
My doc says I have to keep an eye on my colon now and get a colonoscopy every 3 yrs.

Thanks for the PPI explanantion.
Does the stomach polyps put you at risk for anything and why do you get them?

Not that I know of. Of course, if you read about them on the net it will say they *can* turn into cancer. Great, huh?

I don't know why you get them but it has definitely been associated with PPI use.

As for the colon polyps, my DH had his first colonoscopy at age 39 because his father had colon cancer at age 45. My DH also had a precancerous polyp (the doctor knew right away just by looking at it) and he also gets colonoscopies every 2-3 years.

Here's what webmd says about gastritis

I suspect I have it too- haven't had the endoscopy though (yet)!

Hope you're feeling better.

Thanks!

I don't think I have H. Pylori but I'm sure he's tested for it. I'm thinking it is due to my NSAID use. I used to take a lot of it during my period and whenever I got an ache or a pain or headache (which seems often these days).

Christine-

All I can say is GOOD FOR YOU! I know it wasn't the most comfortable experience, but you did something so wonderful for yourself!

Colon cancers and issues can be almost 100% rectified (ahem!) if caught early. You will be able to sleep better at night knowing that you are OK "down there"

Woo Hoo for you:woohoo:

Thank you for sharing:thumbsup2

These things should be talked about. It should be as common as going to the dentist. Many lives would be saved if more people talked about getting a colonoscopy:goodvibes

Christine.....I've had this several times and it took 3 times to finally find a drug that would not make me "throw up" afterwards.Hopefully, if you do it again ,they can find something else for you. ((hugs))

annegal--the funny thing is: I've never had a problem with anesthesia and nausea before. I've had several surgeries over the past few years and no issues. But, this particular time they used Demerol and I have had problems with that before. I've never had it used in an anesthesia and will make sure that I never do again. Of course, having a "horse" dosage didn't help either.:) The place I was *supposed* to have this done at, uses something called propofol along with the Versed. I think I've had that before and it does nothing to me. The place I went to yesterday, the doctor did his own anesthesia (no propofol) and I didn't have an anesthesiologist there like I would have at the original location.

Gosh, I still feel out of it. When I type I just feel so STUPID!

I was a bit of an Ibuprofen junkie..... between my horrible sinus headaches, cramps and the osteonecrosis in my hip I used to take way too much. I think this may be the cause of my stomach problems. My doc has me on Protonix right now.

Is it normal to have GA when having a colonoscopy in the states? I'm a Endoscopy nurse in the UK and unless there is a specific problem the majotiry of people have this procedure done without a GA. Just wondering! :goodvibes

They don't give general anesthesia for colonoscopies but they do use sedatives and stuff to put you in a "twilight" kind of sleep.

Yeah, I'm a little concerned about that part too...I take a daily PPI as well.

I'm sorry to hear that your colonoscopy/upper GI experience was so awful. At least it's over, though. Did they remove the small polyp during the procedure so you don't have to go back for 5 years (or whatever the timeframe is)?

I believe so. I will get the info on Monday. I was sort of out of it yesterday but my mom said he was like "no big deal". He wasn't that way when my husband's was removed. He was fairly clear about what it was and that he needed to come back in 2 years.

Funny that this thread should come up

I was talking to my mom this morning (she's visiting her brother and SIL) and my uncle was supposed to have a colonoscopy done this morning. They called last night an hour before he was to start taking "the stuff" and cancelled it. My aunt and uncle live in up-state NY (45 minutes from Albany). They currently have 2 1/2 feet of snow and can't even get out of the house. Everything has been closed and they are being told not to go out (like they can really get out of the house right now, lol).

I had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy a few weeks ago, as ordered by my doctor. I'd been having some problems and she wanted to rule out cancer and other things so I had the "pleasure" of those tests too.

For me, the prep was the worst part! I was up until 1:00 am the night before my procedure. I didn't eat anything at all for 36 hours hoping to make it easier and I think it did but it was still hard!! I drank and drank and drank water so as to avoid dehydration.

It's scary to think about the procedure, but the only thing I remember was they wheeled me into the room and put something in my IV. I asked the nurse if it would make me sleepy. "Yep," she said and the next thing I knew I was waking up and it was over. I had no polyps and they couldn't find anything wrong which was good, but gave me no answers to the issues I'd been having. The doctor said it was most likey due to my nerves and gave me some anti-spasm medication that does seem to control my issues.

So that's my story and I'm not eager to do it again, even though mine wasn't that bad! ;)

So sorry your experience was tough.

I'm not sure if seeing this thread is good for me today or not;)

Saw a gastroenterologist for the first time yesterday. She is sending me for an HIDA scan/test of my gallbladder, and I will have an upper endoscopy on Tuesday. I've also got a prescription for Protonix that I need to fill.

I'm a little nervous, even though I probably shouldn't be.

Ugh, what an experience, Christine. I'm surprised they increased your Prilosec usage if it cause a polyp?
