Yesterday I had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy. I have had mild anemia and they were doing these procedures to see if I had a GI source of bleeding.
For any of you living in the mid-Atlantic states yesterday, you know we had a pretty good ice storm. I was worried sick about this storm and having my procedure cancelled, but the doctor's office assured me several times that they would be there NO MATTER WHAT! So, on Tuesday evening, I began my prep which, of course, had me up all night on the toilet.
At 4:30 a.m. (morning of my procdure), I get a phone call from the endoscopy center telling me that they were shutting down for the day due to inclement weather. OMG! I was beside myself. I phoned my doctor and he called me back and was able to get me into another hospital that he uses (he also had a procedure there later that day). Thank God for that man. He is a wonderful doctor.
So, me and my mom made our way through the YUCKY weather in her little Corolla. It was about a 40 minute ride. That was tough with the "prep" still working.
I got checked in and put in the bed. Then, they could not get an IV into me. I guess I was very dehydrated. It took two nurses and three different spots to get the IV in. I've had MANY surgical procedures and have never had a problem before, so I don't know why this was a problem. But it was very painful.
They finally wheeled me into the procedure room. They put some Demerol and Versed in the IV. I felt myself go under but I would not go all the way. They kept giving me more, but I woke up several times during the colonoscopy. It wasn't horribly painful, but I could feel it. When they did the upper endoscopy, I didn't wake up. I guess there was no pain associated with that so it didn't pull me out.
When I came to, I was very sick. Threw up there and on the way home (sorry TMI), despite the anti-nausea meds. My doc said he had to give me 3 times the amount of drugs that they give everyone. I was sick most of the evening and this morning is the first I've been able to eat.
Despite the bad experience, I do not have any bleeding in my colon. I had one small polyp, and diverticuli and that was it.
My stomach was a whole different story. I had some hyperplastic polyps in there (due to Prilosec usage), I had fresh bleeding in my stomach with no known source (no ulcers, etc), and my esophagus was inflamed. I am told I have GASTRITIS. I don't really know what it all means or why I have this. I was so out of it. My doctor upped my Prilosec dosage and I am to use Carafate for a month and go back to see him.
So, that was my story. If you know anything about gastritis or have had similar stomach experiences, please share!!

I did this last year in March.

The place I was *supposed* to have this done at, uses something called propofol along with the Versed. I think I've had that before and it does nothing to me. The place I went to yesterday, the doctor did his own anesthesia (no propofol) and I didn't have an anesthesiologist there like I would have at the original location.
