Georgetown Student, Too Busy to Drive Self to Work, Seeks Personal Assistant was originally published on City Desk on Oct. 22, 2009, at 11:40 a.m.

Being a college student is very demanding. There is the whole academic thing. Like going to classes, and completing homework assignments. Then, on top of that, you’re expected to feed yourself. And clean yourself, and clean your clothes, and clean your room (or not). It’s all too much, really.

Which is why one Georgetown University student -- an overtaxed sophomore! -- has placed an ad with the campus’ student employment office seeking a personal assistant.

The Georgetown Voice’s blog Vox Populi reprints the ad in full. We offer some of the highlights here:

As my PA you will receive an email once a day by 9:00 am with a task list for that day and a time estimate for each task. Important tasks will be bolded on the list and must be done that day (even though everything on the list should theoretically be finished on a daily basis). At the end of the day you will send me an email telling me what tasks are incomplete or that all tasks have been completed.

Seriously?

The pay is listed as $10-$12 an hour, which isn’t bad, really, for the work Mr. Busy Student wants done. Among the tasks listed:

Organize closet – make bed -Drop off / pick up dry cleaning -Drop me off / pick me up from work -Do laundry -Fill up gas tank -bring car for servicing -schedule appointment for haircut -Pay parking tickets -manage electronic accounts -shopping and running errands -other random tasks.

Start date: immediate. Perks: occasional bonuses at employer’s "discretion."

I think this picture will go on many DIS threads....

I'm surprised he has a job.

:lmao:

I could use a personal assistant. But I work full-time, go to school part-time and have an 8-month-old baby.

My daughter, who is a high school freshman, has a personal assistant. She does her laundry, drives her to school, keeps her room clean, makes sure she has all of the school supplies she needs, keeps her calendar organized and makes sure that she gets to her swim practices and swim meets on time and with a fully loaded bag, takes care of any bills that need to be paid, library books that need to be returned, etc.

She calls her MOM!!! :rotfl: ............P

I can't believe how bad people are at managing time. I worked a mandatory over time job while I was a full time college student. That's 48 hours a week of work and 12-16 credit hours a semester and I managed to graduate in 3 years by going through the summer with a 3.8 GPA.

It doesn't require a personal assistant, it require dedication and hard work, that is all.

So what? If he can afford to pay for it (or his parents can) why not? Hey, he's creating a job for someone else and that's a good thing.

I don't see this as much different than picking up food at a fast-food restaurant because you're too busy to cook for yourself, or buying your clothes at a store (and maybe having a tailor shorten them) because you're too busy to sew your own.

I actually think what he's doing is good preparation for the future. I know many women in particular who still try to do everything themselves and are so stressed out as a result, even when they could afford something like a cleaning service or other kind of help. Learning how to delegate work and manage a personal assistant is a good, practical skill for many business people.

This is not really such a new thing. When I was in college in the late 60's,(yeah I'm old) I had friends that earned their spending money buy doing laundry and typing papers - they charged per page!

I think I've heard that some schools offer laundry service as part of their regular services!

Pay parking tickets? :confused3 How many parking tickets does this person get that paying them is part of his/her regular routine?

heck, if i lived in the area, i'd pick up his dry cleaning and drive him to and from work for $10-$12 per hour!

Agree while it sounds over the top, if you can afford it, go for it.
Agreed. Heck, if I could've done this as a college student I would've! It's the little things that make life easier- although it does sound like he needs to grow up a bit. :rolleyes1

My thoughts exactly!:lmao:

:thumbsup2 Yep, I go to school full-time, work part-time, and have 2 children, 2 dogs, a house and a husband! Please! I always love when my classmates complain about being "too busy" to do an assignment. Really? I'll show you busy!

Well, I suppose Prince William and Prince Harry could've used a personal assistant during college . . . but the rest of us should be able to manage that level of busy-ness and stress.

I notice that picking up "the employer" from work is one of the tasks. If he has the money to hire an assistant, why not quit working and pick up the dry cleaning himself?

I bow down to you!
I go to school full-time, too but I only have the one kid (sometimes DH counts).
My friend dropped all of her classes because she said she didn't have the time to finish them between her chiropractor appointments. :confused3 Some people are just baffling.

I'm trying to figure out where he parks is his PA is supposed to drive him to/pick him up from work??

I work full time (40 hours a week), have a part time job, attend college full time (3 nights a week), have 2 kids that have activities 6 days a week, a dog, cat and guinea pig, no husband, I clean, do the shopping, do the laundry (no dry cleaner for me) cook, maintain my car, cut the grass and shovel the snow, should I go on???

Why does it matter? If he is paying out of his own pocket (ie not having his parents pay for it) then, why not? It's his money after all.

The average cost of attendance at Georgetown is over $55,000 a year. 55% per cent of the students receive financial aid. 45% per cent of the students receive no financial aid.
Newsflash to the dis, there are rich people out there!! ;) This kid probably has "hired help" at home and he/his parents can afford to continue that while he is away at school...

Some colleges have room-cleaning services so the students don't clean their own dorm rooms!

I had seen this kid's ad posted on another site, but they were saying it was a joke, I guess it wasn't!

Meh, I'd need more info about how they do the parking there. At the local university, they sell a ton more parking permits than there are parking spots. At least the commuter ones, not sure about those living on campus. Their reasoning - not everyone is parking at the same time. Which is mostly true. Mid-day, you're NOT going to find a spot. With the rules about automatically failing due to too many absences, regardless of grades, sometimes you just gotta take that ticket. I had once semester where I got a lot of parking tickets. I had a full time job, so it wasn't like I could get to campus early, and the class was only offered once the entire semester.

I also would argue that it isn't necessarily a matter of time management. I've always had one of those schedules that makes people ask how I do it. As I've gotten older, I've made the choice to outsource some stuff. I'm still looking for someone to do my laundry. It's not that I don't have the time. It's that I prefer not to do it all the time. I'm not gonna be on my deathbed wishing I'd done just one more load of laundry. If I can afford it, then why not? We're certainly not rich though.
