DH and I have cold feet. We are now questioning if we even want to buy a new camper. I think it is the lack of confidence in knowing we are getting the best deal. I hate it.

For example, we found yet another camper that we really love. Ok, great. One way the salesman says it is "X" amount with our TT traded in, and then "X" amount if we buy it outright. It is not much of a difference. I guess I don't understand why it would be different?

For example: 20k with out trade, 19k with trade...umm, makes no sense? (My camper is worth way more than 1k!

We are going to take our current TT camping August 6-8 to a local camp ground, and see how we do in it. If we do good, then we will just continue to camp in it. Once we sell it, then we will just use that money towards a camper, but in the mean time we are just going to save, save, save. We may end up paying cash for a new one before we sell, who knows?

I am just so frustrated with it.

I know what you mean.

We keep going back and forth between keeping our pup and getting a new TT.

Then there is the "Should we rebuild our tow vehicle or buy new?" decision.

So many choices! lol

Oh, and from what I've noticed, it's pretty impossible to get a fair trade in quote. Best to sell your old one and put the money towards a new one like you said.

Course paying cash is even better!

If in doubt, don't. That's what my Mama always told me.

I hear ya! We spent forever looking and pondering...do / don't...then we had a whole year of don't since my DH had been laid off from work for 11 months....I don't know anything about trading in TTs or any camper for that matter since this is our first. What kind of TT do you currently have?

Go with your gut. If you use the TT again and find it is just getting too small, keep trying to sell it yourself. Eventually you'll get a buyer. Then when you shop for a new one you won't have to worry about the trade muddying up the deal. Easier to compare pricing. And always Google the model and floorplan you want to see what dealers around the country are getting.

Each time we upgraded, we did not trade in our camper on the newer one. We never got a deal that sat well with us. One option you might want to consider is putting your current camper on consignment from a neutral party. We have done this twice and we told them the price range that we could live with taking and they came right in that range each time. They get their commission and you get your price. If you are only going to get 1K for your trade, it might be something you want to look into. I hope you can figure out what is best for you and your family.

Buying new is never fun. In theory, if they are quoting you full retail on the one they are selling, then they should be allowing you full market retail on your trade in. The same way if they are selling a TT at end of the year 'wholesale', then they should figure the wholesale price for yours.

It is always best to: 1) sell yours outright and 2) buy new either at end of year when they are getting ready for the new inventory, or early spring when they have the rv shows with special prices & special financing.

Sell yours first if at all possible. Once they see your trade they will not even negotiate price on the new one. In my case the basically refused to give me a new price after I withdrew my trade. In the end I was robbed of three grand equity on my Pup. But they had the camper I wanted and once the misses fell in love I was stuck.

My advice is never even mention a trade. Just ask the out the door cash price. Then use that against them in all further negotiations. Such as financing or trading.

I would seriously sell it yourself or do as AuburnJen92 suggests and put it on a consignment lot to sell.

We have one of the largest Auto Auctions in Florida just 5 miles from our house and it has more RV's and boats on it than cars. It's been that way since the economy tanked in 2007. Most of them usually come from RV dealers that took units in on trade that they don't want to bother re-selling. But since the economy tanked, I think the latest batches are from bank repo's. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is a buyer's market on used RV's, and the dealers are well aware of it. They won't give you much of anything on trade right now. If you can hold off (and you probably can), sell your unit yourself & then go bargain on a new one. Like I said, it's a buyer's market and cash always speaks volumes to an RV salesman.
