I just inherited a coffee maker with a cone filter. My old coffee maker has the flat filter. Is the cone filter capable of making superior coffee, and if so, should I grind my coffee to a different consistency(coarse or fine)? Thanks :) :surfweb:

I feel strongly that the cone does provide better coffee than the flat. However, superior coffee is more strongly influenced by the quality of the beans, the freshness of the beans, the quality of the roast, and the brewing method, than by the shape of the filter.

The granularity of the grounds is dependent on the brewing method, not the shape of the filter. Automatic drip is automatic drip, and thereby beans get a bit coarser grind than, say, manual drip (which I find makes superior coffee), and a much coarser grind than french press.

Maggie!!! :wave2: I do buy Starbucks beans, and before I ever got a grinder, they would always ask if I had a flat or cone filter. I assumed that meant they would grind them in the fashion best suited for that filter. :confused3

News to me. I suppose I could see doing a slightly finer grind with a cone filter, since the grounds at the bottom get a bit more pressure from the water. If so, that may be why the coffee tastes better from a cone filter. That extra pressure is what is missing from the typical Mr. Coffee machine.
