Club Intrawest - Can I "trade into" a DVC resort

So, I just want to begin by saying that I know nothing about timeshares. While out with some friends today, I mentioned that I was considering renting a 2 bed suite for our May 2011 Disney/Seaworld vacation. I mentioned a few resorts that I was looking into and my friend mentioned that he owns a Club Intrawest timeshare. He purchased it for $30 000 a few years ago, but has not used it recently due to financial issues. I was thinking that I could offer to help this friend out by renting some points from him (not sure is this is the correct term?). However, I don't know where to begin. He seems knows very little about what he owns and where he can stay. Here are a few questions that I have;

1) where can I stay in Orlando through Club Intrawest? Can I "trade into" a DVC resort - remember I already admitted that I know nothing.

2) How much is fair to offer per point? I'm looking for a decent deal, but I don't want to take advantage of someone in need.

3) Can anyone recommend a website that I can get more information on Club Intrawest or timeshares in general? I don't want to get too technical, I just want a better understanding of the process

Thanks in advance for your responses.

complicated.

the thing is that if someone uses RCI or II to trade their timeshare week into the orlando area, they are prohibited from renting that trade.

assuming your friend has been making annual payments on that timeshare, they can offer you a week at the timeshare they own...but not a week received as a trade.

My last trips have been in DVC via Intrawest, from what I can see you can book all DVC hotels just not the tree house villas. It is a supply and a demand thing though, so don't have your heart on one resort.

2) How much is fair to offer per point? I'm looking for a decent deal, but I don't want to take advantage of someone in need. I would talk this one out with your friend and try to come to an agreement.

If you are looking to buy one, do your homework some compaies open up and then close in a flash and then you are out of your money....

Hope this helps!!

This Thread should give you the basics from the DVC side. They essentially run a balance system and once one side gets a little heavy, they shut that one down until the other catches up somewhat. You might also look at trading in through RCI or a private exchange. IIRC, the costs from the CI side are fairly reasonable.
