My daughter will be 7 in a couple weeks and we went birthday/school clothes shopping yesterday. Yikes! What happened to the cute butterflies, hearts, and flowers? Everything is tight, short, and sleezy looking. Tons of the stuff has chains hanging from it. We didn't buy anything.

Where do you shop for your girls?

I know Gymboree now carries up to size 9. I think I am going to head there. They are expensive, but it is quality stuff.

I know what you mean. My daughter is in 8, and some 7's.

I have found cute, non trashy things at Target/Sears (the Lands End Section), and the Gap/Old Navy. Also check landsend.com and llbean.com, both those websites have sale sections.

Some of the tops (she wears an 8) at Gap/Old Navy were a little  but they just seeemed skimpy.

OTOH, I saw a bikini in the Disney store that was a bit risque. I don't mind little girls bikinis, and this one was a spandex one.

The top part was plunging, and the sides were cut so you could see an hourglass shape... goodness this is a bathing suit for a 6 year old, not a 16 year old! I showed it to my daughter, and she said it was UGLY!

My almost 7 year old daughter has the same problem

I have the same problem. DD1 is a tall 5 1/2 and is wearing 6X and 7/8s these days. I shop at Target most of the time. I can usually find age appropriate clothes there. But I aam appaled at what is available for kids these days.

I know how you feel. My dd is 9 and I have the same problem finding appropriate clothes for her. I refuse to let her wear anything with writing on the butt. I see no reason for little girls, or big girls for that matter to draw attention to their behinds. It's so hard to find nice clothes, that cover their little bodies. I would add The Childrens Place to the list of stores that carry nice kids clothes. Good luck.

Same problem here. I don't want my eight-year-olds to look like miniature Britney Spears. I used to get a lot of their things at Kids'R'Us because they had slim sizes and this year it's harder to find things that fit and are acceptable for school. Fortunately my kids aren't at the age yet when they complain when I tell them they can't get a certain shirt - hope it lasts through the teenage years.

We're in the same boat here too -- oldest DD just turned 8 and the clothes available are just apalling. Fortunately she wears uniforms for school so we only have to worry about after-school/weekend clothes.

Just had to throw this in.....my daughter is 10. This weekend while at the mall, we went into Abercrombie Kids. I was just curious to see what they had.

OHG....I couldn't believe the skirts. I had my daughter try one on, just to see where the length fell. I couldn't believe that some parents buy these skirts for their daughters. No joke, the skirt fell an 1" below her butt AND it was too big. I told her, imagine where it would fall if it actually fit!!!

I feel your pain. My DD's have always been tall for their ages. Try looking for appropriate clothes for an 8 year old that wears junior sizes. She can't understand why I won't let her get some of those t-shirts (you know, the "I stole your boyfriend" ones).

Target does have some cute things. You may want to try Land's End (catalog or Sears) and L.L. Bean - cute styles in lots of sizes. Old Navy/Gap are hit or miss with their low cut v-necks and low rise waists (they do have regular waist pants but you have to look). If you have a good sporting goods store near you (we like Dick's), they have really cute clothes that are comfy and cover everything. Nike and Reebok all have really cute lines for girls.

Good luck - I really wish the stores (especially dept. stores) would think about all girls, not just the little Britney-wannabes.

Oh my! I ran into the same problem just last week when I went looking for some red and white shorts for our Disney vacation in 11 days!!

I couldn't believe how SHORT the shorts were. I went to Kohl's, Target and Walmart and I had no luck. They were really short or had words on the but. Horrible.

I hope this trend doesn't stick!

I am in this situation as well. I used to buy at Target and Kohl's but now both of those it's hit or miss as to whether or not there are things that are appropriate. BTW, my DD is 7, wears size 8 bottoms, but she's so long that she has to wear size 10/12 or L tops.

I haven't been to The Children's Place yet, but I have checked out their website and like what I see in terms of more classics cuts for girls.

I am DYING waiting for the bell-bottom/flare pants fad to DIE. Can't stand the way they look, plus even for my DD, they always make the pants to long so the hems drag on the ground! Yuck!@

I am having this problem too. DD6 will is in a 6X in pants and shorts, but is wearing 7/8 tops. I don't understand why clothes manufacuturers think we would want our elementary aged kids to look like they were 18. I wouldn't even want my child wearing some of those clothes when she's 14, let alone 6. I second Old Navy, they have trendy stuff without being sleazy trendy, also Target and Gymboree. You can get things on sale at really good prices at Gymboree. I also shop on-line alot for her at Land's End (bigger selection than what they have at Sears) and L.L. Bean. I think they're really reasonably priced and quality is excellent. I've had some good luck with Kohl's recently also. Children's Place is hit or miss, last fall I found nothing for her there, but got quite a few cute tops and shorts there this summer. Even JCPenney has gotten kind of sleazy trendy for 7-16 sizes.

THE CHILDRENS PLACE is the best!!!! No sleezy stuff here. I believe it goes up to size 12 or 14. Very cute, stylish clothes for kids.

My daughter will be 8 soon. I buy 80% of her clothes here. Colors are great, prices are really good and the clothes hold up well.

Check it out, you will be happy:D

::yes:: I so agree with you! Girls' clothing is just horrible. I am not raising a miniature hooker here but a little girl that I would like to be able to dress like a little girl, not a hoochie mama. I wind up with lots of Disney Store t-shirts. Sometimes I put DD in boys shorts because they are longer. I hate the age-inappropriate shoes for girls too. My daughter does not need to wear heels to anything. Boo on the clothing industry for manufacturing this junk and boo on the people who buy it! :wave2:

zulaya - You are wanting bell bottom/flare pants to die out....well you may get your wish sooner than you think. I've noticed a lot of 80's style clothing coming back in and while at the mall this past weekend, I saw tapered leg jeans!!! My daughter didn't like them at all. She is all about flared legs!

Another vote for the children's place!
We buy most of dd's (7) clothes there
Very stylish, colorful and hold up very well

I feel for you all. I have boys but I was shopping for my nieces this past weekend. Didn't buy much cause I didn't want to get shot by my sil's.

the designers must not have girls of their own.

I've got to get on the ball with my back to school shopping but it is always a nightmare. I too have major issues with finding clothes for DD. She is alittle chunky so she needs a bigger size. But we have to stay away from the jeans because of the flares...cannot do a thing about the length being too long. Sometimes she can get away with a stretch type material that has flare bottoms, but they still drag. I too do not like the writing on the butt, but gave in to a few pairs of shorts. I had the length on them too, way too short! I tend to shop at JC Penney, but have to be selective in what I get. I do love there skorts though. I think they are the greatest thing out there. My DD loves wearing them and I can relax about her not always being 100% ladylike.

I'll probably be getting sick over the choices this year later on in the week when I take on both DD's and the mall.

BTW-you should have seen how crazy I had to go the beginning of June when I found out DD's black skirt for her band concert had to at or below her knees!

This is a HUGE peeve of mine, clothes for girls!!! My dd is 8 1/2 and I have a terrible time shopping for her. She is not a slim, but she is nowhere close to fat, but to get jeans to fit her in the waist, they hang past the bottom of her feet (and she has long legs). And in tops, to avoid her belly button hanging out, I have to buy her L/XL or 14/16 to fit. It drives me nuts!! I have noticed this falls clothes are getting a little better, a lot of carpenter type pants and camoflauge even (sounds weird, but they were kind of cute). Kohls had some stuff that was good, but they also had a t-shirt (that looked very narrow) that said Brat in sparkly writing right across the chest. Yeah, my dd will be wearing that, NOT!

Erika

I feel the same way and my DD is 15. The clothes are sleazy, everything is tight and short.

Gymboree will be going up to 12 online with the next line too! They are expensive but I sell our used stuff on eBay and get great money back for it. :) I'm very excited about them going higher in size as I was dreading going elsewhere after size 9.
