Closing of It's A Small World : DL Rehab

Anyone here that its closing for refurbishment again soon???
My mom heard it somewhere but I hadn't so I thought I would check the best info site out there on Disney! LOL!

I understand that it is a Disney classic, but I would love to see it gone. I dont think the ride is all that good, and then after I ride it, I have that @#$% song stuck in my head. I would like to see it replaced.

And for those planning trips to DISNEYLAND, their IASW always closes twice a year for refurb. The ride is completely redone for Christmas, with a different song and props reflecting the Christmas holiday. So it always closes in the fall to get it ready for xmas and then again in January to take it down. Haunted Mansion at DL is the same way, it also gets a holiday makeover (Nightmare Before Christmas) and takedown every year, meaning it is also closed twice a year for a few weeks.

As others have said, IASW at DISNEYLAND will indeed go down for a lengthy refurb while they take down the usual holiday decor and also install new troughs that are deeper. I cannot imagine they would close this attraction down at either park. In DL, IASW is very much a part of their nighttime fireworks display with projections put on it for each performance and with its holiday theme a Disneyland classic in more ways than one.

thanks Amy & Dan.. I had forgotten about the holiday re-fit out west!

I know I have felt the boat slide against the bottom, when DS and I were the only ones on the boat and I am not THAT big! :lmao:

Although the Disney company doesn't admit that plus-sized tourists are causing "It's a Small World" boats to bottom out, longtime Disney watcher Al Lutz notes that "heavier than anticipated" loads have caused boats to come to a standstill on more than one occasion. The problem has become common enough that Disneyland has built a platform next to one tricky area where boats commonly get stuck.

Disney denies that weight issues are the cause of stuck boats. Instead, the company suggests that "layers and layers" of fiberglass have built up where maintenance teams have patched and re-patched problem areas.

Nevertheless, "It's a Small World" will be getting an inch more of water, and some lighter boats. The ride will be closed for ten months beginning in January 2008.

Dont worry! This was a question on Anita Answer on allearsnet.com yesterday.

Julie and several others write:

I just heard a terribly distressing news story that states that It's a Small World is closing because the bottom of the boats are rusting! I called Disney but they just looked on their computer systems and found no information. I am desperate to confirm or deny this report as we are going to Walt Disney World very soon and this is my daughter's FAVORITE ride. If it will be closed, I need to mentally prepare everyone. :-)

Thank you for any help you are able to provide.

Hi Everyone!

To quote Douglas Adams, "Don't Panic!" The news reports you've been hearing are regarding the It's a Small World attraction in DISNEYLAND, not the Magic Kingdom in Florida.

In a nutshell, the Disneyland attraction, which was designed and built for the1964 New York World's Fair and moved to Disneyland in 1966, has been having some operational problems of late due to its outdated design. The narrow and shallow flume will be redesigned to accommodate new, more buoyant boats, and I also hear that the outside of the attraction will be redone at the same time.

The much newer Florida attraction (1971) is of a different design and is not affected by the types of problems the California one experiences. Having undergone an extensive refurbishment recently, it's unlikely that the Florida attraction would need any major downtime for awhile.

Hope you all have magical trips to the World!

A.A.

Either way it does bring up a concern I have had a number of times at Disney. Very overweight guests and the strain it must put on the mechanics of a ride.

I've merged this new thread into the existing one.

Thanks,

Knox

Hi all,

Some people at work said that there was something on the news saying they were closing It's a Small World. I checked all over and I do not see this anywhere. Has anyone else heard this? I don't believe it and I don't think it is for refurbishment as I believe it was closed for that when I was at WDW in 2004.

Anita Answer on Allearsnet.com just clarified that Small World is closing at Disneyland in CA, not at WDW. Something about rusting boat bottoms on the older boats at Disneyland. So no worries!

From what I read in MouseSavers.com It's a Small World in Disneyland (not WDW) will be closed for refurbishing from 1/22 - 11/28/08.

it's a small world at *Disneyland* is closing for a refurbishment. The troughs are wearing out and the boats are bottoming out a lot.
