OK, I finally took out my 300mm with a 2x teleconverter on it today. Like pet shots for people new cameras, it appears to be a cliche to take egret shots with a new long lens. I wasn't particularly smart about it, going out at midday and wearing a bright red shirt. I went to a retention pond nearby which had lots of birds, but it didn't have lots of cover, so I couldn't get very close. The pictures are on a FF shooting at 600mm, f/8, and cropping down practically to 100% views.
I didn't even know the turtles were there until I saw them in post processing. That gives you some sense for how far away I was. Then again, I'm not particularly observant, so it doesn't say too much.
Not being a bird expert, I think that is a pelican in front, a snowy egret in the back left, and a great blue heron on the back right.
More pelicans
He was checking out my gear. Clearly a Canon fan.
