CLIA Plan: Shore excursions

Whelp, it looks like the CLIA is planning to mandate cruise line provider-only shore excursions in the hopes of getting the CDC to lift the no-sail ban. If that policy is still in effect next year, I'll be canceling our cruise. I'm happy to wear masks, get tested, have proof of vaccination, etc, but I don't need babysitting at port and I'm not paying a premium for the privilege of being herded around like sheep.

Yeah, I saw that and was commenting about this on another thread. Looks like no more quick trips over to the casino at Baha Mar or Atlantis when we're in Nassau.

Feel the same. Fine with testing but will not follow a mickey paddle and be herded like sheep.

Maybe they will come up with some sort of variation of do-it-yourself. As long as the group remains together, with no exposure to locals, there's no reason they couldn't just do a walking "tour". Or, even, shopping "tours" to various shops. Hopefully, at not a steep cost.

That will never work. I think at least for the short term, them controlling where you go in port is the only way they can reduce the risk of people getting sick or dying.

Yes, they can have a group (that stays only to themselves) walking about. And they can select a small variety of shops for the group to enter for shopping. Still controllable.

Honor system? We've seen how well that has worked the past six months elsewhere with covid-19.

No, in a conducted group. Small groups with guides. Probably more than one.
Don't they already have some excursions like this, like the private vans/buses?

It wouldn't bother me, but we always do the DCL excursion for peace of mind and because I am too lazy to find something else, assuming we get off the ship. The only time we go on our own is when we just walk around the port, ie Falmouth and Cozumel. We did walk from the port in Barbados to the Mount Gay drinking museum. The walk back was much nicer than the walk there :rotfl2:

Not an issue for us if that gets us on a ship out in the winter or spring next year.

MSC and the European cruise lines have handled it well so far. I think they had a bundle of 3 excursions for 100 euros because the underlying cost of the excursions had fallen as well. They also took guest feedback from the first few tours and made changes to appeal to what most people wanted. Shopping was one one of them - where they would secure an entire shopping plaza or block for their guests for a period of time.

Remember - as shocking as it may sound - the cruise lines need guests right now more than the guests need them. Expect them to play nice - for the time being anyways.

This is a total bummer. We never do excursions unless we have concerns over personal security. We typically rent a car or scooter and bomb around whatever islands we happen to be on that day. It is the best type of adventure ever... not being able to do that will take a lot of fun out of a cruise for us.

For a Caribbean itinerary it wouldn't be a big deal for me because we've been to those islands so many times we rarely get off anymore. Caribbean cruises are all about the ship and getting away to somewhere warm. Transatlantic crossings would be fine too because there are so few ports. For port intensive cruises like Europe or Asia, it would be a deal breaker for us. Nope, not doing the big bus, only as fast as the slowest person on the tour. Now, if they offered small group, semi-private tours of like my family and maybe one other. I would consider booking something like that.
