Cleaning teeth with a quarter?

Have you ever done this, or with another type of coin?

Why do I ask, is your next question?

Well, while walking to Penn station after work in NY, I was in front of Macy's herald square waiting to cross a street. I turn to my left and what do I see? A lovely family of tourists, who looked lost. Well I offered directions to where they were going and they were so relieved...I told them where they needed to head, and as I'm saying bye, I see the man digging in his pocket.

I'm thinking oh he doesn't have to give me money but he pulls out a quarter and starts to clean his teeth with it. I said well nice meeting them and enjoy their stay and hurried on my way.

My concers are:
a) Does he know how dirty that coin is?
b) How does a quarter clean your teeth?

I have never done it, and I never would. That's just nasty. Perhaps he thought it would scrape the plaque off his teeth; after all, the coin is hard and circular and may be a good plaque scraper, but still, ewwwwwwww!

I did a double take but from what I saw he was scraping his teeth. He had nice teeth (no spaces) so a quarter wouldn't fit between them.

and hey like SM said, it works on lottery tickets, so I guess it's a good plaque scratcher.

Well, there are some cases where cleaning your teeth with a quarter (or a jackhammer, or a toilet brush) would actually be beneficial for your teeth:

If I had seen those teeth and then he pulled out the quarter, I might have gagged and threw up in my mouth.

Well...it's gross and weird...but to be honest, sometimes if I'm just playing with a coin I find myself sticking it in/near my mouth…then I catch myself and take it out really fast! Really gross I know (God knows how many dirty hands and what else has touched the coin) but at least I haven’t died yet! Some things you just do without thinking I guess...
