Does anyone have a cheap way to clean makeup brushes? Mine really need to be cleaned but I've only ever used expensive cleaner. Suggestions?!

For most brushes any type of gentle soap/shampoo would be fine. The PPs suggestion of baby shampoo is perfect! This works well for both synthetic and natural bristle brushes.

HTH! :wizard:

I always used baby shampoo like the PP

I know Mac makeup sells something to clean them I think it was $10 for a bottle of the cleaner. sometimes at xmas time it is in a package with other things...

I used the MAC brush cleaner and also the baby shampoo. Thanks for posting this because it reminded me that I need to clean my brushes. :)

Thank you everyone. I will have to pick up some baby shampoo! I love easy solutions :cool1:

Yep, this is what we all did when I was a full time makeup artist. Just make sure to rinse well, and smooth the bristles down before drying. Most brushes dry overnight on a towel.

I agree on the gentle liquid soap. You also want to wipe the brushes down with alcohol once a month to disinfect them. I use a lightly saturated cotton ball to wipe down the bristles and the handles and then wash them in ivory. Non-scented soap is best, especially if you have any allergies or fragrance sensitivities.

Baby soap / shampoo

I used the Target brand which makes it even cheaper than using Johnson & Johnson! :thumbsup2

I don't buy anything special for cleaning mine. I use the same cleanser I use to wash my face. I have very sensitive skin and this way I already know that it will not cause any irritation.

I just use Method hand soap to wash mine - I have been doing it for years and it has worked just fine.

Good advise, and lay them flat to dry, not upright like in a cup.

I have very nice brush cleaner by Japonese but only use it when working on multiple clients. It's in a spray form and removes color before moving onto the next client. Otherwise when I actually want to 'wash' them I use baby shampoo.

I just use whatever shampoo I have. Brushes are made out of hair, or if synthetic, the shampoo won't hurt them. Shampoo is designed to get rid of oil & grease and product.

Brushes usually fall apart if there is residual water left in the ferrule (the metal part.) The glue holding the bristles in place may get soggy and the bristles fall out. Always shake the excess water out of the bristles in a downward motion to get the water out of there. Then shape the bristles to dry.

I did a lot with stage makeup in college, and we cleaned our brushes with baby shampoo. We cleaned our faces with it too! Works great to get off that heavy makeup.

Dillute dish detergent with a bit of water and swish your brushes in it. Then rinse with VERY hot water!

another vote for baby shampoo + warm water. i put off cleaning my MAC brush for a long time (naughty) cause i was worried i'd ruin it, but it worked just fine.
