Clarification on expiration of SW credits?

If I have credits that expire, say, May 15, does that mean

a) I have to apply the credits to a purchase by May 15 (ie credits expire May 15, so on May 10 I use them to purchase tickets for June 20th travel)

b) that I need to have completed my travel with said credits by May 15?
