Civil war in families

I hate them. My family used to be fun and caring. We used to get together every other weekend for cookouts or whatever. There was always at least a dozen kids to play or argue with.

Now, it's so awful that most of them won't even speak to each other.

What about holidays? Maybe just a get together once a year would be better. That's about all I can handle with all my family together, but I like to see them seperately apart from the others. Did that make any sense? Hard to explain.

It's sad. I know from experience. Most every one is getting along at the moment on my husband's side but you never know when something will erupt.

Sadly our family is split like that as well. Thankfully we just stay away from each other so there is actually no fighting just not speaking. Its so so sad.

I thought when I married into DH's family (excluding his immediate family, I knew they were a mess going into it), it was so neat the way all his aunts/uncles and cousins got together every weekend and holidays out at grandma's and sat around talking, laughing etc. ( I am an only child, so I never had this type of family get together's.) Once grandma went into the nursing home the fighting started over the $$$$ and things went downhill. My dd's don't even know his aunts/uncles or any of their cousins. Kinda sad.

Unfortunately, the older I get and the more people I talk to, there are alot of families like this.

I'm sorry yours is too.

I truly sympathize and hope that things settle down. Having come from a really small family I envy those who have extended families...even if they argue. Believe me, holidays with my family are pretty sad...there are only four of us now...even an arguing family would be better than this!

This civil war has been going on for about 20 years. Every since my grandpa got sick. I think my grandma went a little nuts or something and was pretty evil to her kids and was telling different stories and all kinds of stuff. I seriously don't think she knew what she was doing. But my grandma is stubborn like the rest of the family and wouldn't ever say she was sorry or wrong. And so the siblings have been fighting every since. I tried to get the family back together before she died and it was working, but afterwards everyone is living their own lives and trying not to deal with the others.
