We leave in 9 days. DH smokes cigars. I was just brushing up on the do's and don'ts for checked luggage. I noticed that you are allowed to carry 2 Zippo lighters in checked bags IF they are in a Cargo Case made by Otterbox.

Question: Does anyone know if these are carried in any stores or are they only available online? I would love to get DH one, but am worried about time constraints. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info.

Um, well, this is the first I heard that there's ANY legitimate way to bring a lighter with you... :teeth:
Okay, first, Otterbox.com offers UPS shipping - never mind that the 'to be sure it comes in time' services cost more than the case ($15.53, $20.03, $43.76 - vs $12.95 for the container; or for $6.59 you can 'Ground for Internet' delivery while that probably only takes three days, who knows for sure?). So, that got me thinking - does he get his cigars at a specialty shop? Is it possible they (or one in your area, if he doesn't) carry OtterBoxes?

Otherwise, is he willing to use matches while on vacation? You can bring up to four books onboard with you. Or I think you can purchase disposable lighters at MCO, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a store that sells good ones, too.

I think this is real new. I also saw the shipping info on Otterbox. I'm hoping the Humidor carries them (that would be Really nice). I was hoping maybe someone had seen these somewhere in a store (Humidor). I just read about this tonight.

I already have matches just in case. But they are not good in the wind. Cigars take a little longer to light than cigarettes. It would be really nice to have his Zippo.

Zippo lighters have been allowed in checked luggage for a while, we saw it on the TSA site when we flew to Boston in 2/2005. I think they have to be empty though????

Sorry...I have no help on the Otterbox.

From Zippo's shipping information page http://zippocasemuseum.com/softContent/shippingAndHandling.aspx?C=cartpane:
Need your order right away?
Two to three day and next day shipping options are available. Completed orders received prior to 12 p.m. Eastern Standard Time will be processed by the next business day*. Delivery signature is required

Two - Three Business Day Shipping
under $50.00 = $13.95
Next Day Shipping
under $50.00 = $22.95
Add an additional $12.50 for Saturday delivery

There are higher shipping rates for more expensive orders - but since the OtterBox is only $12.95, the OP can get three of them for under $50. If she orders by noon Friday, she can have it by Wednesday at the absolute latest - sooner if she pays for faster shipping/delivery (i.e. for a 'mere' $35.45, she could have the box as early as Saturday).
Thanks for the link, Horace!

****Update*****

I found a Humidor that carries them. It's a different brand, but it is DOT approved.

Um, wouldn't it be a lot easier and cheaper to just buy a disposable lighter when you get off the plane? :confused3

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration (PHMSA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation has authorized Zippo to sell and distribute two different containers for placing lighters in checked luggage. These authorizations, known within PHMSA, as SPECIAL PERMITS, allow regular liquid fuel windproof lighters to be placed in the tackle type box manufactured by Otter Box, and all approved lighters (liquid fuel and butane gas fuel lighters) to be placed in the new Zippo Air Container (ZAC). Both of these travel containers will ultimately be available through Zippo or its distributors. I believe that an earlier comment that only the Otter Box is currently available is correct. If you are having difficulty purchasing one, please let me know and I will try and help you out. Another concern here is that even though the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is aware of these Special Permits, and has noted them on their Prohibited Items List on their website, you may find that an individual screener at a particular airport may NOT be familiar with the special permits. If that occurs, we urge you to calmly explain to the screener that up to two lighters are allowed in these special travel containers per passenger. You may want to refer the screener to the the Prohibited Items List. If all else fails, you may have to "voluntarily surrender" the lighters to the TSA. If that happens, please contact the Aviation Security Department at TSA upon your return and let them know what happened. They may be able to help you. I hope this posting is helpful to you and I am sorry that you are inconvenienced by these new post 9-11 restrictions. However, it is the world we live in today. Update for those interested:

DH was able to carry his Zippo lighter in our checked luggage w/ a DOT approved carrier. The one I found was by Colibri and I found it in a Humidor. It looks like a big yellow capsule. The other one is OtterBox and is available online.

DH was a very happy person w/ his Zippo lighter this trip. His cigars can be a little difficult light on a windy day w/o the Zippo.
