Can Somebody please tell me if there are some churches in the Disney area that you can easily make it to on Sunday morning for service by using Mears or a cab. We plan to stay at Pop, so something from that area.

We a Christian church with Christian Services.
My in-laws want a catholic congregation.

Any help would be great.

Yeah, I am sure this is in the wrong forum. Sorry. I'm sure somebody will move it soon enough. :D

Thank you for that link Dan. This is exactly what I was looking for. There is an affiliate church of the church we attend here at home, but I do not think it it very close. My husband is pretty weird about going to just any church. Hopefully this will give him what he needs to decide where we should go. I really appreciate the quick response.

And might I add, you rock. :D

I think, but am not posative, that the Poly has a Catholic mass twice on Sunday and they have a general protestant service. Definately check it out because getting to the poly would be more convenient than taking a cab to downtown Orlando.

Actually, I believe that that's as of August 11, 2001 or 2002. They stopped offering services at the Polynesian quite a while ago. They ONLY offer a Catholic mass on Easter Sunday, and it's at the Contemporary's Convention Center. And I believe it's only one mass...not two anymore.

Does anybody know where this is or if it is far from Disney Property?

From Disney property, follow the signs to 417 North (Airport) or take 536 East which runs right into 417 North. Exit South (right) on John Young Parkway. Turn right at the first light, Town Center Blvd. Turn right again at Town Loop Blvd. Go under the 417 overpass and take your second left, into Hunters Creek
Middle School (look for the Calvary Chapel signs).

We always fly, never drive, so I know nothing of roads in Orlando.

we, too, are looking for church services... although we are considering fellowshipping/worshipping thru song at the house of blues gospel brunch instead... i'm very disappointed that disney no longer offers worship services on sundays...

I was not aware of that. I may have to check into it. Thank you for mentioning it. :)

Walt would be very disappointed, too. Another great idea by Eisner, no doubt!

It seems the Unofficial guide visitors to the catholic church mentioned were not entirely poitive. Felt the focus was on money making. YOu might want to check it out. I truly don't know from experience, but wouldn't want the folks to have a bad time!

Actually, I heard it was the Catholic Church's idea due to the shortage of priests.

Mears used to offer shuttle service, don't know if they still do.

From what I have read and been told, this is not a true catholic service. This is more of a tourist place where they try to get you to donate money to have your name put on a pew ($999.00), tile or wall. This marian shrine is not affiliated with any diocese and stands on their own. My in-laws went there in 2002 and other than all of the Mary statues, they found this place to be creepy.

Even if the catholic local diocese did that, it would not explain why a Christian church (or Protestant as some choose to say) would not have stayed onsite. Disney had to have had their hand in it.

The Protestant service at the Poly was the first to go, followed by the Catholic. Low attendance and lack of priests/ministers was the explanation. The Mears chuttle was cancelled by Mears for low usuage also.
The mass at the Queen of the Universe shrine is a full Catholic Mass, no need to fear. The Saturday evening service is particularly well attended. No, it is not a parish church but ministers to tourists etc in the Orlando area. Yes, there is fundraising but no more than any other church. I didn't find it to be creepy, it's a regular cathedral-looking church.

This will be quite a drive, but not bad traffic-wise on a Sunday. At least 45 min each way.

We've been to Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine and it definitely is a Catholic Church. Not creepy at all, but they do start the Mass off asking for donations since the church is geared towards tourists. I actually think it was a beautiful church!! I just wasn't fond of the 15 minute speech on making a donation, but I understand that they need to do this. We took a cab from the WL to Sunday morning Mass and I think it was approx. $25 each way and the trip was maybe 10-15 minutes. Mears Shuttle also provides transportation (for a small fee) from a WDW resort for one of the Sunday morning Masses.

We've also gone to Holy Family Catholic church in Orlando before and they are a little farther down the road than the Shrine. Here is their website if you would like to get directions and Mass times. They are a Parish, but I did see a lot of visitors (people jumping out of cabs) in attendance :D

Good luck with your plans!

Here is a direct link to Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine.

The cessation of services at Disney had NOTHING to do with the Disney company. It was completely the decision of the Catholic Church to pull their services. They simply did not have enough priests to effectively minister.

For the small minority who took umbrage at the closing of the masses, we have this to say: the time is coming when Catholics will have to make much larger sacrifices to get to mass, because short of an outright miracle the priest shortage in this country will continue to worsen. Prayers for priestly vocations far exceed in value than any complaints! Be kind to your aging priests! They may soon be all you have!

I don't know about the Protestant churches and why their services stopped.

To the OP...

For those who are looking for a Catholic Mass, the best resource I know is the Mass Times website. It will give you the times for mass in parishes all over the USA.

I'm not sure about the exact location of the Calvary Assembly that you were looking at, but from when you get on 536 it would probably be another 10 minutes to the church. If you do decide to go there, there is a Catholic parish very close to it. The parish name is Holy Cross and they're a very nice parish community, although the parking lot is horrible to get out of.

To whomever said they didn't think Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine is truly Roman Catholic or recognized as part of the diocese, you are very much mistaken. The Shrine is a recognized part of the Diocese of Orlando and is also the site of many diocesan events, namely the annual Chrism Mass and the diocesan 25/50 wedding anniversary renewal Mass. However, the Shrine IS NOT a parish, in that it has no local parish community to support it. The Shrine was established as a service to the tourist community here in Orlando and grew out of the need to provide church services to Catholics visiting the area. It is really more of a mission church than a parish church. The reason they do make an appeal for donations is twofold, IMO. One is that with no local parishoners, they depend completely on the generosity of the tourists to maintain the facilities there. And since usually when you go on vacation you visit a parish that has a local parish family to support the works of the church the appeal lets people know that the Shrine works a bit differently in that respect. The second reason they do it, I think, is to give latecomers an opportunity to arrive without missing any of the liturgy of the word.
