Christmas vs. Xmas

So I was wondering. When talking about the upcoming holiday (if you celebrate it) what do you say?

I personally say Christmas. Because being catholic, it bothers me when someone says Xmas because afterall, that's what Christmas is about..Christ.

I say Christmas. Xmas just doesn't make any sense to me. It kinda annoys me when someone says "Happy Holidays" and they get annoyed if I say "Merry Christmas" back.

It just seems more cheerful.

But I don't have anything against X-mas. Even though I don't really get it.

I use Xmas only if I'm writing something, like a note or something. But I always say Christmas. I've actually never heard anyone say Merry Xmas to me before..

And if someone says Happy Holidays, I'll say that back, because I think it's offensive if I was Jewish or I didn't follow Christianity and someone said Merry Christmas to me. Happy Holidays is more appropriate for strangers.

Side note: I just looked it up on wikipedia, and this looks like a pretty reliable source, so here's how "xmas" started.

"The word "Christ" and its compounds, including "Christmas", have been abbreviated for at least the past 1,000 years, long before the modern "Xmas" was commonly used. "Christ" was often written as "XP" or "Xt"; there are references in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle as far back as 1021 AD. This X and P arose as the uppercase forms of the Greek letters χ and ρ), used in ancient abbreviations for Χριστος (Greek for "Christ"), and are still widely seen in many Eastern Orthodox icons depicting Jesus Christ. So, basically the X is a symbol for Christ, and it's not meant to be offensive.

I say Christmas. When I was little, my mom told me that I shouldn't say X-Mas because it is taking Christ out of Christmas. I agree now and only say Christmas.

I don't SAY xmas, I write Xmas.
I think it's ridiculous that people think the holiday has become un-Christian because of THAT. IT'S A WORD.
What kills the origin of the holiday is how materialistic it's become. A lot of people only see the presents aspect of it.
Now the thing for me is, I'm an athiest. I still celebrate the holiday, because what it means to me, is time to really enjoy the presence of our families and friends, spend time with them, make memories. To me, Christmas is about spending time together when the rest of the year we're so busy with our lives to stop and really ask how everyone else is doing.
Christmas means something different to everyone, Christ hasn't been in Christmas for ages. He's not in Christmas for me, I don't believe that he did the things the Bible said he did. Don't flame me, it's how I feel.

I say Happy Holidays. I don't celebrate Christmas as the day of the Christian Christ's birth mostly because...well...it isn't. December 25th was a day that just got picked out of a hat. You can't pinpoint it exactly (and it would change every year) because back then they used a lunar calendar and measured time not by specific dates. It was based off of the Jewish calendar. The current Jewish year is 5768 and according to their calendar what the "current" calendar that most of us use, december 25th actually falls on the 16th of Tevet. It would take a lot to track the actual birthdate of Jesus, but I'm sure it can be done, you'd just have to move it every year.

This year I'm giving and receiving Christmas gifts (though I'm not a follower of any deriviation of the Christian Religion), Hannukah gifts (even though I'm not Jewish), and Winter Solstice (the winter holiday I actually observe) gifts. I still say Happy Holidays, even if somebody says Merry Christmas to me.

Xmas is still a correct shortening of the term Christmas, though. STOPxmickeytime pointed that out. I say Christmas, but I write x-mas. But only if I'm asking somebody who celebrates it or discussing it in class.

I see nothing wrong with writing Xmas, but I wouldn't say it. If anyone wishes me "Happy Holidays", I thank them and wish them "Merry Christmas" because I am celebrating Christmas, not assuming that they are. Merry Christmas, Y'all!

I alternate between the two when writing or typing (which some people might have noticed...) and i sometimes say xmas when i'm out and about but it's mainly christmas (i feel like i'm the only one who says xmas on here when talking...or maybe i'm not, i just skimmed through the posts...)

But it doesnt really bother me.
When I was little I thought that X-Mas was those things that people make up that dont celebrate christmas or dont like it. For example, like those anti-prom things xD
