Christmas Comes Early PTR Nov 27 - Dec 3 2011 **What's YOUR Opinion?**

I would love to have a sweatshop Disney. I currently have a trip over bins of fabric and laundry baskets laundry room that I can barely move in. I had to pull down a few bins of fabric for the BG I am working on and still don't have a fabric for the back panel. And since I got a new machine I now have two machines and a serger on my sewing cabinet (the embroidery machine sits on the counter where I do my cutting). Such cramped quarters!

So you are back to roll up pants??? Your boys are confusing me!

Sorry the button holes aren't lining up correctly. My button holer has gotten a little finicky, but I still make due.

So do we have pics of what was accomplished at Sweatshop Disney???

Yay!

So today I packed up shop and went to the Bestie's house - and from there we went to what I will lovingly (in all seriousness) refer to as "Sweatshop Disney" where we sewed for 3+ hours until it was time to get kids from bus stops and we went back to Bestie's house and got into a disagreement with Frannie's friend Button. Button did not see the need to put the buttonholes she was making EVENLY on the front of Bestie's dresses. :headache: Even though I helped her line them up and EVEN broke out the hem ruler for guidance. Button is now on my $hit list. She can make buttonholes for roll up pants, but as of now she is NOT allowed near any dresses. Maybe she can redeem herself, but it will take a lot of convincing on my part - and maybe quite a few practice pieces.

So - I have Finn's pirate camo pants done except for his roll-up tabs (and the pants are all french seams and spiffy). I have my Mickey skirt done except for sewing on the ric rac (it does help to have a Bestie who can ruffle like nobody's business:cheer2: ). I still have a ways to go and I need to go through my list and cross stuff off so I can give y'all an update on numbers, but I'll get there :)

Tonight I attended my book to movie club - we saw the latest in the Twilight series :) And then hit Salsa's for some yummy food and even yummier frozen drinks. Now I'm off to take some sinus headache meds and try to sleep - busy busy busy day of sewing tomorrow!!! And - best part? NO SOCCER GAMES to attend!!!:cheer2::woohoo::yay::woohoo::cheer2:

ACK!!! I am so jealous - I want a "Sweatshop Disney" too!@!!!

Sorry Ms. Button wasn't up to working yesterday... Maybe it was a Vintage sewing machine holiday? Obviously, we weren't notified. :confused3

Hmm - maybe I should have explained what "Sweatshop Disney" was - our friend Lucia sews professionally and the two front rooms of her house are set up as a cutting and sewing extravaganza! HUGE cutting table and then a dining room table with a beautiful new embroidery machine that her boss just bought her, a serger and a regular sewing machine.
So, Bestie was on the serger making dresses for her girls, I was on Frannie (because she did NOT want to stay home and mope while I went to sew on someone else) sewing tabs and pants and my Mickey skirt and Lucia was on her combo machine doing stuff for Bestie's dresses. The kids ran amok and we stopped to eat some pizza we had delivered, but it was pretty much sew sew sew with a break here and there to iron something :) Ala - Sweatshop Disney!:wizard:

I wish I had a bestie that would ruffle like no ones business... Do you check her out on loan???? :surfweb:

D~

Do you play Ocean State Soccer? Both my kids played one season together and it was hard, especially since dh was gone so often. DD, who begged to play, hated playing so we'd just skip her game if it was at the same time as ds's and dh was gone.

And I've met Figment -- years ago when I was in my 20's -- I'd estimate a good 20 years ago. He came up to me and kissed me -- I think we even have it on film. We still have one vcr so I really should go take a look at the good ol' Dis days. My sister used to live in Jacksonville so I'd visit her every couple of months and we'd always head down to one of the parks for a day.

This was the Warwick Soccer Association and I have never seen a more dysfunctional association. They were never like that but this year DS and DD did not have a coach until 2 days before all the scheduled games and we had signed up months before. I was almost going to ask for a refund but they finally found coaches.

Lucky you for meeting Figment. When you start your PTR after selling your house for huge amounts of money you will have to post pictures.:goodvibes

I have pictures with Figment, Phalen & I from when we went in 2008. Not my favorite picture of ME, but I love Figment, so . . .

I've been to WDW at the end of January/beginning of February, but I was 4 the last time I was there the week after Thanksgiving. Is it going to be hot? warm? cold? Would they be fine in easy-fits that are now lined? Or are they going to be too warm and want to roll them up? What about regular easy-fits? Just one layer of cotton. . . are they going to be too cold? Just right? HELP!!!!

:goodvibes Love that picture.

Glad the science class went OK. That is just too much work.

Thanks for the ideas on the Alice skirt everyone!!!

Tonight I have a special surprise for all my loyal viewers :happytv:

I have an outfit for each of the boys complete and pictures taken - please excuse the faces - they were being "silly"
Here are their Ohana outfits -
th_974a0bb9.jpg

th_8ef9534a.jpg

Now, I can't take credit for anything more than the idea of these outfits - I have to thank Mimi for sewing the pants for me and Beth (Blyssfull) for helping me out with the shirts! They're FABULOUS!
We had a great time opening two boxes full of awesome Disney attire tonight - the box from Beth and the box from Mimi both happened to arrive on the same day! :cool1: It was exactly what I needed to go chain myself to the sewing machine and get a bunch done. I have a long way to go, but I'll get there!

I don't have the pants done for the boys Cars outfits, but I have to share these pictures of their bowling shirts (Mimi made them - without lining and without the modified instructions on how to do so!). I want to put something on the back, but I'm not sure what - should I do their favorite car??? something else? Leave it alone???

Thought of the day: I think we should name our cruise "Sweatshop Disney"...

okay - just a quick flyby post so y'all can keep me on the straight and narrow and I don't deviate from my plan by cleaning the house or something!

Today I must make:
Flags of the World Pants (2 pairs)
Hem Christmas pants (2 pairs)
Cars Embellished Jeans (2 pairs)
Finish Mickey Skirt

Maybe it was a Vintage sewing machine holiday? Obviously, we weren't notified. :confused3

In other words, you never really want to see the pic of Figment -- do you? I'm not even sure I have a pic -- I think it's on a VHS tape.

I would sew any day over cleaning. However, I'm on a BG sewing break because I'm at the ickiest part of the dress -- straps and lining -- yuck! I take my breaks at the computer. I've been surfing Dis and helping dd with her Christmas list. And now that she's made me broke, I should go sew some more!

You have a lot on your plate today, but I expect pics of everything tomorrow!!!!

Sweatshop Disney was lots of fun - and we've discussed doing it again, the only problem being that preschool is out this week because of Thanksgiving - that means we have extra children running around :)

Ah! The roll-up pants - well, the OLDER boy has decided he DOES NOT want Roll-up pants. However, the YOUNGER boy is determined to HAVE roll-up pants, so I'm only saving time on every OTHER pair of pants I make.
And ask D~ all those hand sewn buttons are a BEEP to deal with! :lmao:

D~

Ms Button decided if she was given a learning aid, she'd cooperate. I now have to make her a dot of where to start her needle each time. :confused3 Maybe she just needs a little assistance :)

And the Bestie is not available for loans . . . her DH would definitely NOT appreciate that :confused3 She's supposed to pop in here now and again - but so far I think she's only posted once :surfweb:

Oh! And maybe it was a Vintage Holiday :rolleyes1 I do wish they'd inform us of these things in advance though, don't you?

YES!!!! Are you going to teach the hand sewn buttons class? :rotfl2: I'm sorry - I just keep giggling about that - DH thinks I'm losing it :rolleyes1
I know it wasn't really funny at the time, but for some reason my brain thinks it's HILARIOUS now :lmao:

So, I can check off the items I have now marked in RED.

I also completed my AK skirt (I appliqued a zebra Mickey head to a knit skirt I bought at Target) and Finn's Pirate Camo Roll-ups (except for sewing on the buttons).

I'm going to move my sewing operation out of my bedroom and onto the dining room table after I'm done on the computer - that way I can sew as late as I want without bothering DH :) I haven't done it before now because it had been so long since I used my machine when it wasn't in its cabinet - but since I did at Sweatshop Disney and the Bestie's house, I know I can do it :)

I may have only posted once but I have read the whole thing and can say that I have lived a lot of it! Like we need another form of communication! We are either with each other, facebooking each other or texting each other for most of any given day. :rotfl: That said I think your PTR is FABULOUS!!! And I'm totally wishing I would have done one. Is it too late? Probably.

See you in the morning! ;)

P.S. My favorite part is where you "meet" Tracy!!

Okay - so I think it's time to post my sewing to do list. These are all the things I still need to make before our trip.

Epcot Mickey Head T's (4 of them)
AK Mickey Head T's (3 of them)
Fab Five Christmas Applique shirts (2 of them)
Cars Embellished Easy Fit Jeans (2 of them)
My pair of Pirate Camo Roll-up Pants
MBYBBQ embellished denim bottoms (3 of them)
MBYBBQ Applique T's (2 of them)
Mad Hatter Tie T's (2 of them)
Figment Skirt
Mickey Capri Pants
Mickey Easy Fits (2 of them)
Mickey Head T's (3 of them)
Epcot Mickey Head Jeans (1 pair)
Mickey shoes (2 pairs)
Fabric Autograph Squares

So - a couple of questions for my sewing friends! Have you made the Epcot Mickey Head shirts before? If so, when you cut your pieces do you cut a full silver circle or just the part that is below the black Mickey ears? What materials do you use for the silver and the black pieces?

How do you prepare the fabric squares for autographs? I know I'm supposed to attach freeze paper, but how exactly? And do you wash the fabric before you do that??? Or just cut it in squares and go?

Has anyone ever do iron on designs onto jeans? Did it work okay or not? I am planning on printing my Mickey Head Flags of the World onto iron on transfer paper and ironing them on to my jeans. Will this work? Or should I iron them onto cotton and then applique the designs onto the jeans? I'd rather just iron straight onto the jeans b/c then I don't have to open up the seams of the jeans . . . but I want them to last too, kwim?

Oh! And I need to make a shopping list! What all do I need to buy to bring to the park? I know $1 store glow bracelets, etc. and ponchos. . . but I'm drawing a blank as to what else I should have!!!! HELP!

^ This is a true statement. :wizard:

D~

Fabric for autographs....use any color of light or white fabric. (I used white on white printed fabrics...and I hate that type of fabric...the 'print' is sort of 'rubberized' and can really mess up your machine....but looks cute when done. One year I used a white on white tiny Christmas tree and one with tiny holly leaves) The autographs show up best on white, but I have used a lite pale yellow or blue...depends on what you want the end result to look like. Cut them into the size you want (I am assuming you are making a quilt?) be sure to add the seam allowances/ Take the freezer paper, and use a medium iron...just simply iron on to the back of the fabric.

Make sure the 'plasticy' side is on the back side of the fabric. Don't worry it isn't really plastic, more of a wax...but every time I say that I get emails that what they bought doesn't have wax on it...it has plastic!

Then I use a small clipboard to help the characters sign. Use only FABRIC markers. DON'T use a sharpie....Sharpie is only permanent on porous surfaces...fabric is non porous. The only time you can't get sharpie out of fabric is when you WANT it to come out! LOL!

A quick story about signing fabric with a Sharpie. In 4th grade, my DD's class were signing autographs on an end of the year t shirt for everyone. I tried to tell teacher that she should use fabric markers and not sharpie. She INSISTED on sharpies. Well, they had lots of games that included water. By the end of the day...not a single autograph was visible. The shirts were a mess of different splotchy stains. Parents paid a lot of money for thoses shirts...no one was happy! (I did notice the next year she was an advocate for the fabric markers!)

One tip...use masking tape to outline the seam allowance. The characters seem to think they should use the whole area for their signature. Several of my first attempts were running into the seam allowance. (had to use some creative thinking to make them work). If there is a blue border around the area to sign...they generally figure it out!

If the freezer paper starts to come loose during the trip...Just use the resort iron to reattach. I carry mine in a large plastic zip bag, along with the fabric markers and small clipboard. (I am also a bit anal, so after they are signed I put them in a separate zip bag and then deposit them in the luggage when I get back to the room! DIL had one square that had signatures on both sides!)

If you have any other questions...I will be happy to help!

You have been super busy (of course, with the help of Beth). I can't believe all you have made! What fabric is on the pirate pants? It looks like a crushed velvet from the photos :confused3 Whatever it is, I like it! Your skirts are great too -- I want to see everything modeled so you had better do a trip report as well!

Okay - so I think it's time to post my sewing to do list. These are all the things I still need to make before our trip.

OMG -- your list is so long. You leave SOON! Are you insane?

I have never done the Mickey Epcot balls but I would cut a full circle and then put the ears over the top of it -- I always overlap when hand appliqueing.

Clueless on the quilt squares :confused3

I'm not sure about the iron on jeans either. You definitely would have to use a strong heat and bond if you want them to hold up, and I think things might be a little harder to fuse to thicker materials like denim. I can understand wanting to save time and I'm sure they will work for the trip, but I can't say anything for longevity, though it may last just fine.

Extras: Can't think of much -- of course camera supplies and extra batteries depending on what your camera uses for batteries. Lipgloss. I always carry a sucker with me b/c if dd has any sort of major crying spell keeping her mouth occupied with a sucker often helps. Your fabric markers for the autograph quilt.

Sooo... How late did you stay awake sewing last night? :surfweb:

I hope you were able to get lots done. :thumbsup2

D~

I stayed up until 11:30 :confused3 not too bad!

But I finished Phalen's Epcot Mickey Head shirt
388297_10150385424371188_623451187_8556945_2099819820_n.jpg

And Finn's is almost done (but I missed a spot of stabilizer and that part of the shirt wasn't going to get stitched without it, so I had to stop) and mine & DH's are done except the black stitching. :cool1:

I had my future daughter-in-law today and we had our homeschool co-op, followed by dance class, so after dinner I'll start in again.

I did make it to Joann's this morning and bought Heat n' Bond Lite (which I was out of) but I forgot to buy buttons for Finn's pirate pants :sad2: I'm not sure WHY or HOW, the 3 kids were only going in 5 directions at once and were arguing over who was going to carry stuff for me and needed to go to the potty and wanted to turn the wheels of decorator fabrics :rolleyes1 Nothing distracting or anything :rotfl2:
I was very annoyed with the girl that cut the Heat n' Bond though - it was a brand new bolt and about 30" in there was an 1" size hole. She cut the piece off and then cut my 3 yards from the undamaged bolt. I asked her if she was going to remanent out the damaged piece and she said "No, there's a hole in it" to which I replied, "I know, but there's still a lot of usable heat n' bond and I'd be happy to pay the remanent price for that piece" She said it was against the rules and had to be thrown away. :headache: I said, "Well, if you're going to throw it away, can I just have it then?" No dice.:sad2:
It just really irked me that all that heat n' bond was going to be thrown away when I was offering to PAY for it.

Anyhoo!
Here are the Cars Embellished Easy Fits Jeans I finished yesterday:
