Christmas Break Timing

I just looked at the Toronto school calendar for upcoming year and was shocked at how late the kids go back to school in January. The last day of school is Dec 23 and they are out until January 9. Is this the same all across Canada? Was thinking about slipping in a trip to Disney right after New Years as I heard attendance was typically low after New Years Day, but if everyone is out until Jan 9, it might be very busy!? What's the timing of your Christmas breaks???

We are in Brant County and that is the same break we have. As a TA I must warn you that many families have enquired about WDW so I would assume it will be very busy.

We were considering this week before the free dining got released for the fall, and my thinking was that the real issue is how many American schools are out on break then (particularly those on the US east coast).
(Our kids are only in nursery school, so we're not really married to the school schedule, yet. Maybe we won't be 'til they get much older -- my nephew will be in Senior Kindergarten this year and his parents are taking him out for a week to join our trip. Yay, go sis!)

The good news is that the schedule is likely to be similar next year, since the kids would get out very close to Christmas (the 25th) as well. :sunny:

Also keep in mind that the weekend of Jan 7/8 is Disney's Marathon weekend. We found the crowds to be higher a few days before the weekend, and didn't die down until the Tues after. Our AP's expire on Jan 6th so if I could get a really cheap flight down for that week, we're goin'! It definitely won't be as busy as Christmas Week, but it will still be pretty busy.

I just checked our calendar for Thames Valley District School Board (London-ish) and it is the same dates.

We're from Montreal in Quebec and the X-Mas break is the same as you, that's why we are going to Disney from Dec 31- Jan 7 !!!!!

Bad nettiquette, I know, but I thought I'd add:
December 2006/January 2007 holidays in Ontario are likely to be*:
Last day of school - Fri Dec 22
Break - Mon Dec 25 to Fri Jan 5
First day back to school - Mon Jan 8

*(if the school boards continue their traditional practice of staying open until the Friday closest to the 25th, and closing for two full weeks; that's been the practice for as long as my retired-teacher-parents can remember so I'd guess it's pretty likely).

Same schedule here for the Upper Canada District Board (Brockville-Cornwall area).

Last day of school: Dec 23
Back to school: Jan 9
Trillium board, City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario.
Therefore, we will be in WDW Dec 31-Jan 7. :goodvibes

OOps, I thought it would be quiet these days but between the New Years Eve crowds possibly staying a few extra days, marathon crowds and school not going back to Jan 9, how busy should I expect it to be???
Thanks
Suzy

Pretty much everyone is the same now, but we all had to get permission from the government to have school calendars amended to show the new change. Our school board applied for the change in the spring (along with most other boards), but many teachers & parents had already booked vacations based on the proposed calendar from the beginning of the year - which if you are a teacher you should no better as no school calendars are final until board trustees approve, which isn't usually until the end of the current school year (which is a few months before new school year begins).

So, basically many of us are considering going at this time, but we still aren't going to make up for the huge crowds that they see the week before when all U.S. and Canadian schools are out. It will be interesting to see what the crowds are like with the school calendar being adjusted like it has.
