I am flying on Airtran, but booked on Southwest. I was able to pull up my reservation on Southwest this morning and choose my seat. It's $10 for the standard seating. Hope this helps someone!

Did you do this while checking in (getting boarding passes) for a flight that leaves tomorrow or did you do it for a flight that is more than 24 hours in the future?

I was not checking in. The flight is over 2 weeks away. When I pulled up the reservation on Southwest's website, under my Airtran flight you can click "View/Select Seat(s)". This takes you to the Airtran website where you can choose your seats.

Southwest's website says this is possible on a mixed itinerary:

Seat assignments will be available for purchase for itineraries marketed via Southwest booking channels that contain an AirTran segment. You will be offered the option to purchase an assigned seat on the AirTran-operated portion of a mixed itinerary.

The option to purchase an assigned seat will be made available to you on the confirmation page upon completion of your booking at southwest.com, as well as in the confirmation e-mail you should receive post-purchase. You can also retrieve your itinerary at southwest.com up to 24 hours prior to your flights scheduled departure time and purchase a seat assignment for the AirTran-operated portion of a mixed itinerary.

Seat Assignment
Q: Is it possible to purchase an advanced seat assignment for the AirTran segment of an itinerary that was purchased via Southwest channels?
A: Advanced seat assignments are not available on shared itineraries purchased via Southwest channels. Customers who purchase an AirTran segment on Southwest channels will be assigned a seat at the time of check in.

Just to confirm - if someone has done this - if you book an AirTran flight though Southwest, you get 2 free checked bags, no change fees AND can select your seats ahead of time? That seems like the best of both worlds if it's true.

Thanks for this! I just was able to do this for our Christmas flight. :)

Thank you!! I was just able to book out seats DTW-MCO and MCO-DTW for our February/March flights. I love the free checked bags AND seat selection! :cool1:

Our flights are nonstop, so no mixed itinerary, and I was still able to do it. They took my credit card number and I printed my receipt with the seat numbers on it, so I'm feeling confident!

Southwest announced the following on their employee website.
Most recently, we enabled Customers to purchase a seat assignment in advance on any AirTran-operated flight that they book through Southwest channels. For a small fee, Customers can select their seat either online or via CS&S. I know this has been a request of our Customers since we first launched network connectivity, and I’m thrilled that we were able to provide that option beginning November 14.

Hopefully AirTran's website will be updated soon to reflect this option.
