Choosing a Cutter

I really need some help choosing a cutter. I've looked at the Cricut and I love the Disney cartridges, but they're so expensive. Plus, I'd like diecuts of characters that aren't included on the cartridges. I've heard about software like SCAL, but haven't found any Disney images that I could use with it, so I don't know if they're comparable to the Cricut ones. I know there are cutters like Silhouette that don't use cartridges and work off your computer, but I don't if they're a good choice if most of what I want to do is Disney stuff. I know what I'd probably go with if what I wanted to do was more generic, but if I want specific Disney things, are the Cricut ones the best quality?

Can someone give me a rundown what's available, and which one is best for Disney layouts?

Thanks so much!

The only one that has ready made Disney images is the cricut. You can make your own or purchase images from others for any of the other cutters out there but as of now Disney has only given permission to cricut to carry their actual images.

I have both a cricut and a craftrobo pro. I bought the cricut exression after I had the craftrobo because it was easier for the Disney images and if I wanted a quick font cutting but for many things I prefer my pro (but when I bought the pro it was $1000 and I am sure it is still up there- it has a cutting ability for things up to 24 inches wide and 30 feet long and is made to be used in professional settings).

With SCAL 2 or MTC (Make the Cut) there are a lot of files available on line for free (or a small fee) that are Disney related. You can also convert images yourself to cut with the program too. I personally own both of these programs and use them with my cricut. There is a rumor that Provo Craft (the maker of the cricut) is suing these companies and that you might not be able to do that anymore? So that would be something you might want to look into if buying a cricut is something you are considering. I really do not know a lot about it, but it is concerning since I have a lot of money invested already :sad2: I know that you can use these programs with different machines though, not just the cricut.

Is your Craft Robo similar to the Silhouette? I have Photoshop and am pretty good at using it, and my husband is a pro with it. From what little I've read, I would use Photoshop and the magic wand tool to separate out colors in a clipart image (like of a character), right? When you make things that way, are they comparable to the Cricut Disney images?

I love the idea of having more flexibility and doing it myself, and also not worrying about lawsuits against SCAL.. but I want to make sure the end product is good quality.

Thanks!
