Chirac hails end of Iraqi dictatorship:eek:

"PARIS (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac hailed the fall of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq and said he hoped the fighting in the country would end soon, his office announced.

"France, like all democracies, is delighted at the fall of the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein and hopes for a quick and effective end to the fighting," Chirac's office said in a statement. "

Of course he had to go on to say he wants a piece of the action.

What is urgent is to allow humanitarian aid in all its forms to be sent to Iraq without delay. As soon as possible, after the necessary phase of ensuring security, Iraq must re-discover -- via the legitimacy granted by the United Nations -- its full sovereignty in a stabilised region," it said.

France led the group of nations opposed to the US-led invasion of Iraq and was criticised subsequently for not stating unequivocally that it wanted an allied victory. It is now pressing for a central role for the UN in post-war reconstruction. "

Part of me says that the UN should play a central rold so that everyone will be involved with money included. The other part says "Why should those who refused to help bring about the fall of Saddam be able to help at all?"

Hmmmm...............

What's the french word for "bandwagon"?

The UN should not be involved for anything other than humanitarian aid/relief because they'll make a mess of things. Not for any other reasons having to do with their position on military action, inspections, etc.

There isn't really a term for band wagon "fourgon d'orchestre" would be close, though.

I think that France should be allowed to contribute labor and materials free of charge to the Iraqi people. I'm sure the French people would never agree to profit from a war with which they so strongly disagreed.

In fact, I'm sure that all of the countries who disagreed so strongly with the US's policy in this situation would want the companies of their respective countries to donate time and materials, I would expect them to demand this. Making a profit from rebuilding Iraq would most certainly be distasteful to such humanitarians. Don't you agree? (I'm not even going to bother with the little rolleyes smilie).

Perfect!

France's contribution should be forgiveness of those billions of dollars in loans they made to Saddam.
