My husband, daughter and I traveled three summers ago. It was an AMAZING trip! The accommodations were beyond first class, and the sites were stunning, and the activities were a lot of fun. Our guides were so friendly and very knowledgeable. I know I'm using too many superlatives but the trip really deserves them!
I found links to 3 trip reports for you, I know at one point there were two different options for the China trip and I don't know if there stilll are options.
We did this trip last summer. AWESOME!!! Once we arrived at the airport in Beijing, we were totally under the care and nurturing of Disney. Outstanding guides (we had James and Steven), every detail taken care of.
We came in a day early, but really just so that we could start to recover from the jet lag. Since ABD spent 4 days in Beijing, we really weren't worried about not seeing everything we would want to see.
It's definitely worth coming in a day early, both for the jet lag and (more important IMO) having a buffer in case flights get delayed.
We did China with ABD three years ago and LOVED it. We've done three ABD trips so far (#4 is 61 days away ) and the wole family agrees it was easily the best so far.
Hey Cousin Orville,
When we did China in 2011, we arrived a day early, but mostly wandered around near the hotel, went to the night market, got dinner and crashed. The next day, day one of ABD, we hired a private guide from the China Guide. Did it on line and I think we paid with a credit card in advance. I don't really remember. A lovely young woman picked us up at the Peninsula Hotel with a driver. We went to the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, lunch (included and they wanted us to order a lot of food), a tea house for a tea ceremony and the toy market and pearl market. These are the places we picked. You can choose whatever places you'd like to see. We made it back to the hotel in time for our ABD dinner. All the places we saw were really great. I'm glad we did the tea ceremony. ABD had one at dinner that night, but we had a full tour, it was a bit loud in the restaurant and you really didn't get the whole thing there. Some families did a tea ceremony in Xian. You eat lunch in a tea house right on the property where the terra cotta warriors are. So that is an option too.
We did China way back in 2008--still our number one trip; so much so, in fact--and with the addition of Xian, and other changes--we've talked of doing it again! (We note with sadness that the HOMA is no longer part of the hotels ABD groups were staying at--we just loved all of the outside artwork, streams, small lake etc). We went in a couple of days early--really enjoyed the hotel in Beijing, and taking in the Summer Palace and the large Temple. Surprisingly, when we flew from LA to Beijing, arriving early morning their time, I adjusted to the time pretty quickly. Coming back was another story--took days to get back in the loop (and not loopy!).
